Ive been wanting to go to Umich since I was young and I would like to know how I stand and what I can do to improve my chances of becoming accepted.

Taken 4 AP's so far. AP Euro (4) AP Comp AP Physics Ap American.

Science Research (4 years)

My passion is science research which I find very interesting, I have entered many competitions such as
Intel, Siemens Westinghouse, Dupont Challenge, Oracle Thinkquest, and Toshiba Exploravision.

My essays will be strong as well as my recommendations.

also, the fact that your school is ranked 13 in the nation doesnt make any difference at all. the ranking system is so messed up that its just a bunch of good to decent random schools.

UMich is a slight reach. Your ACT/SAT score is fine, though improving it would definitely help make up a little bit for your poor GPA. BTW, calculate your UM GPA (only academic classes count, no weights, chop off -/+'s, A=4, B=3, etc) and if it turns out higher then your chances just went up. If you get deferred, make sure you improve your grades first semester junior year. And DON"T FORGET TO APPLY EARLY.

Yeah but you forgot that like...65% (not sure if this stat is accurate, it's what I remember off the top of my head) of students are in-state. And the average GPA is now at 3.8 (it's going up).

So for OOS, competition gets stiffer, and you'll need to be above avg...

Heck, I'm in-state, great ECs (seriously...), had a 3.65 UW, 32 ACT AND legacy and I was deferred. Though I did get accepted a few weeks later oddly enough :S. However, a few of my friends have also been deferred and they have similar grades / test scores (3.7 + 31, 3.7 + 33, both deferred0.

I know as a state school Michigan needs to accept a certain number of kids from Michigan, but based on my, albeit limited, knowledge of out of state Michigan students, i don't think it's THAT much more competitive. I'm sure the university doesnt mind getting an extra 20 grand for every out of state applicant as well...

so what do you think my chances are, even if i get deferred i know i can work as hard as i can senior year to do really well and i will be applying as early as possible in rolling admissions.

Like I said, I believe UMich will be a slight reach. At the worse, I believe you will deferred, and from the accept rate for deferrals is though to be around 30-50% (never formally released, that's just what alot people think it is)
