I need to write an essay about an important issue in the world...

This is one of the essays for my ED college.

I've already written an essay about the environment, but now I'm having doubts. I originally thought it'd be a good idea since I founded my school's green club and therefore I would be able to elaborate on it.

However, I know the environment is a cliche topic and I want my essay to stick out. Then, I thought I could write a really good essay on discrimination, but that is most likely another cliche topic.

What are some issues of national/global importance that I could write about?

anyone have any good ideas? hunger? political awareness? politics in general?

I think you might end up with your best essay if you write about something that you already know about and care about. “Important” doesn’t necessarily mean “one of the famous ones everyone’s talking about these days.” Is there anything you have any first hand knowledge about or really care about? Any of the topics you mentioned are great if there’s a focused part of it you can talk about.

What does your Green Club do? If one activity is collecting recyclables, you can go with that (for example), but rather than write about how important recycling is, focus in on something specific, like how many more people would do it if it was made a little easier (ie, trash companies didn’t charge extra for recycling, work places had a recycle bin by the trash can, manufacturers used packaging that recycles easier…), and what you’ve tried that worked or didn’t work to make it easier for people to recycle. I would recommend that whatever subject you pick, avoid a preachy “why discrimination is bad, and here’s an example”, and instead, write about a specific, understandable, wrap-your-head-around-it subtopic.
