high quality schools that could be considered safeties or safe matches:

small schools:
union
skidmore
holy cross
clark
fordham
villanova
franklin & marshall

big schools:
uconn
rpi
rutgers
northeastern
temple
syracuse

Thanks. Waiting for other suggestions...

virginia tech

your thirty is much better than your 1870. unless you SAT rises dramatically, use your ACT score.

vermont
umass
penn st
new hampshire
ohio state
maryland
miami u
ohio uni
uconn

UMD's average W gpa last year was a 3.96 and its middle 50% for the SATs was 1240-1380. An 1870 would be 1240-1250 on the two sections if it is even. I don't know if that is exactly a TRUE safety but it seems to be a match. I mean i wouldn't put that as my only safety and I guess people only need 1 or 2 safeties if they really are safeties.

My score was 1270 on the 1600 scale.

But I WILL bring up my SATs and ACT scores. And if I score 32+ on my ACT, I might only submit that and forget the SATs. But that might look odd, since I am in SAT country (NJ).

Rochester Institute of Technology could be a good safety for you.

my bad, i didn't see your ACT score. I had about a 4.0 W and a 1380, though my UW was lower, i used psu as my safety and it was great because I knew i was in just 9 days after I turned in my application. They were really fast and it was great to know that i was in a school back in december. I could forget about applying to schools I knew i wouldn't go to.

As for UMD-
All Admits Fall 2006

The 9,448 students admitted to the University of Maryland have an average (weighted) GPA of 3.96 and the middle 50% of SAT scores range from 1240 to 1380, and between 28-31 on the ACT. As a result 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1240 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1380.

University Honors:

The 2,536 students admitted to the University Honors program have an average (weighted) GPA of 4.26 and the middle 50% scored between 1350-1480 on the SAT and between 30-33 on the ACT.

College Park Scholars:

The 2,629 students admitted to the College Park Scholars Program have an average (weighted) GPA of 4.02 and the middle 50% scored between 1270-1380 on the SAT and between 28-31 on the ACT.
We have admitted students from all 50 states and over 100 countries.

Your SAT ACT at 30 and your GPA at about a 4.0 is inside the middle 50% for maryland so I would say it is a safe match. ONly thing is 98% of those who applied to UMD submited SAT scores. UMD and PSU are really the same thing but in two different states. You could apply to either. If you like the big school, sport oriented, and fun atmosphere you can look at these and pick which one you like better and apply to it. If you are using these as safeties then you could apply to PSU because you will get an answer well before you do from UMD as long as you apply priority for both.

Bump 10char

Bump again

C'mon guys....I want some more.

Really you only need 2 safeties if they are really safeties. Make sure they are or you are introuble. Financially you should be able to pay for your safties too. Make sure you would still be happy if you ended up at your safety.

What do you want in your school? Sports? Big city? Small city? Big school? Small school?

Check out this thread. College help posted the rankings made by gourman 10 years ago. They are a little dated but helpful

Post number 101 shows the math <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2406086&highlight=Math#post2406086%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2406086&highlight=Math#post2406086</a></p>

Post number 24 shos the rankings for physics.
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2139371&highlight=physics#post2139371%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2139371&highlight=physics#post2139371</a></p>

Those lists might help out a bit.

Thanks for the Gourman rankings.

NJIT...

can you explain this

NJ Southern Regional: 1st Astronomy, 1st Robot Ramble, 3rd Computer This!
That's how I did for those events in the NJ Southern Regional Competition for Science Olympiad. I also got 1st in states for Astronomy.

Those Gourman Physics ratings....if a school isn't on there, does that mean they are no good for Physics? Because one of my favorite schools is Lehigh, and they are not on there...

I wouldn't let that change your mind. I would talk to others about physic majors and then figure out if lehigh is good. I don't know nearly enough about physics to help. Don't let a ranking make you feel bad about a school. There are very helpful people here that probably know all the answers to all you questions.

Why don't you use your state school as a safety?
