Because my adviser and everyone at this college is useless. Anyways I’m majoring in Biology. I’m not sure what I want to do after college but my adviser tells me I need to pick a “focus” ex: neuroscience, health science, bioinformatics, etc. Can anyone tell me the difference between any of these focuses and why must I pick one? I’m a freshman and completely lost.
The focus may depend a lot on your school and may have to do with upper level biology elective courses. A lot of schools require a certain number of upper division biology credits, but offer a wide range of course to choose from that fulfill the requirement.
As for after college plans, you should be doing research on this. What could you see yourself doing? Do you want to go to professional school (Med, Dental, PA, etc), be on the research/academic side, something else?
It is not too early to start thinking about a career plan but you still have time to direct your studies once you decide. You don’t have to make every decisions now and you will find that as you take more courses, you may find something that you can get really interested in. The one thing you can do right away (that is in the Fall) to help you get more information is to volunteer in a faculty research lab. By doing this you will expose yourself to that environment which might be interesting for you and you will get to talk on a casual basis with graduate students and the professor to gather more ideas about possible career paths.
