I’m a former Division I athlete that knows a lot about the recruiting process. My brother was also a DI athlete as were both my parents. I have a lot of knowledge about the recruiting process and currently help young student-athletes and their parents navigate it for FREE. I want to start a Non-Profit to educate parents and kids on the recruiting process but I’m not sure how to differentiate myself from my competitors, which would be recruiting agencies. My main goal would be education but I also have lots of contacts with coaches. So, do you have any ideas on how to make myself different and what advantages I should focus on to help my customers to the fullest?
is it one sport in specific?
if you want to do a not for profit, maybe having a niche would be good?
Ok thank you! I have the most experience in basketball, football and volleyball but I want to focus on all sports.
Didn’t you start a separate thread on whether to use a specific recruiting service, pros and cons?
Can you explain a bit more about your business model? If you will be advising parents and kids for free, then who pays you? If you are not expecting to be paid, then you could start a blog and accept questions. Perhaps your blog would accept advertising. You haven’t provided enough info about why you would need nonprofit status.
I’d either start out in a one or two sport niche on a blog to get a name established, or else I’d start out at one or two local schools and get started that way. Jumping into a national market for all sports isn’t going to make the type of difference you seem to be looking for, as you’ll likely end up facing in too many directions at once and never be close to anyone.
If you want to see a helpful site that really explains how college recruiting works (and that’s actually run by an NCSA employee!) go look at collegevolleyballcoach.com. He makes recruiting in that sport completely understandable and it doesn’t undercut their business model too badly. (He’s also selling a book on the side, but the content on the site is the book so I’m not sure who is buying it.) Anyway, if you could produce that level of explanation on a blog for the world and also consult via email with a limited number of kids who you could get to know and help make specific decisions you’d be getting somewhere. Good luck.
@CheddarcheeseMN Thank you. I just think there are lots of sharks in this industry looking to take advantage of parents and kids. There is enough info about the recruiting process online for FREE and I’d help aggregate and centralize that content so it’s easier to find. I do have to support myself but I don’t have a clear idea of my business model just yet All I know is I want to help people.
