I never knew there was a SAP ... =[

So I just found out that financial aid has term limits ... I thought that only cal grant had a 2 year (8 term) limit but I was informed that all financial aid (i.e. Pell Grant, University Grant, and other grants) has 9 SAP terms or 150% of credits needed to graduate. SOOO my problem is I started school in CC in Spring sem and USC only has fall acceptances ... well I got in after 2.5 years or 5 semesters at my CC... I will need to graduate in 2.5 years because I am an Accounting major and at USC for a transfer student to major accounting it takes 2.5 years to graduate.

My question is, I received pell grant for spring 2011 summer 2011 (i have no idea why i received for summer) Fall spring 2012 and Fall spring 2013 ... so in the end I have only 4 terms or 3 terms if the summer 2011 is counted which is pretty sad cause i only got like 400 bucks when i could've gotten 44k from USC ... what do I do? Are sap appeal turn over % high ? do i have to pay for my last semester or even worse last year at usc? all 44k of the tuition =[ very scared ... any info would be great.

You would need to ask the FA office at USC. The State is out of money and have told the universities that they are limiting monies to students who take more classes than those that are advised for the major.

USC is a private college and if you do well, you may be eligible for their private endowment monies so you need to ask.

The state monies are from the pell and cal grants and the loans are from the federal loan programs. So, once you lose those moneys, you have to consider where the rest of your money will come from.

well tuition is 44k I get ~6k + 9k for Pell and Cal grant which is a total of 15k. But I am worried that my biggest FA being a university grant of 35k will be taken away before I graduate …

Also its not that I want to take more classes its just the circumstances turned out that way and the degree I am pursuing requires transfer students to take an additional semester, hence the 2 and a HALF years more I have to attend.

Also I am interested in how I will appeal and the success of these FA Award limit appeals(SAP Appeals)

You have to ask the SCHOOL about their institutional limits … they are the only ones who can answer. Make sure you don’t just ask a general question. Find someone who will look at YOUR file and tell you what YOUR situation will be.

As for Pell, the limit is 600%. You can log into [National Student Loan Data System for Students](http://www.nslds.ed.gov) to find out the % you have used to date. Each year, you receive a Pell award of 100%. If you go full time (12 credits or more) for each of two terms in a year, you will have used the 100% in a year. However, if you take fewer than 12 credits in a term, you will use less than 100% for the year. The %'ages get added together, and when you reach 600%, you are out of Pell forever. There is NO appeal for Pell, since Pell is federally regulated.

^ Ya I’ve checked that already and its around 257.333% … so I’m good for another 2 years and a half and maybe more? Well I have a meeting with academic adviser Monday … I just don’t understand why if I transferred the amount of aid received at CC is considered at USC.

All of the money that is being tracked is taxpayer money, and there is a cap put on it to encourage people to get that degree in a timely manner.

All the credits attempted anywhere are taken into account for SAP. Even if someone has never received a dime in aid, they can be ineligible if they don’t meet SAP.

^well I understand that but what finishing school in 5 years doesn’t seem like straying away from timely manner of receiving a degree …

I’m guessing my best option is to wait and see after this semester so they can calculate all my sap …

Does anyone have or know anyone that did SAP appeals for exceeded time that were successful ?

^ Four years would be the expectation for the timely completion of an undergraduate degree.

^ of course but I started in spring and USC and other privates only do Fall Admits so I had an extra semester at cc because I started to early and I have to stay 1 more semester at USC because my major requires me too. =[ so instead of 2 years transferring and graduating in 2 years I transferred in 2.5 years and will be graduating after 2.5 which is a total of 5 years -_-"

I had the same question as you and got great responses in my thread.

oh and I also called the FA office and got an official answer
