I never thought I would do this

okay, after lurking around the chances thread, I promised myself that I would never do this, but here I am... I know, I'm weak. But, please you guys, be critical, I want to hear how I'm doing. I can take it.

JUNIOR

Grades/Rank/Tests
GPA: 4.00 UW, 4.63W
Rank: 1/500 competitive public (hopefully, it'll stay there :)
Test: yikes... PSAT 195 (i know, it's horrible) I'm not planning on taking the SAT considering the above score. So, ACT I took it today... hoping 33 (1st try) I know that it should be higher, but we'll see
Classes: Hardest possible, and then some. I jumped 2 so far, to AP Chem and AP Calc.
AP: taken- Chem and Euro 5's
will take: Calc BC, US, Physics, Spanish, English Lit, Biology, Stat, Gov, Macro

EC
Math Team 9-12: bunch of regional and state 1st and 2nd
AMC 10: 120 (school winner) AIME qualifier
Science Oly 10 :( club got cancelled this year: regional medals 3rd
Chamber Orchestra 9-12: Violin
Varsity Tennis
Hospital Internship 11
nursing home volunteer 9-12 ~120 (started a music program b/c they didn't have any)
NHS 11-12
WYSE 11-12

I know, it looks kinda of pathetic now that I've listed them all. No leadership positions whatsoever, but I'm HOPING by senior year... math team? Is that too late? I know I got a lot of weakness: test scores, no passion/leadership. I'm working on it.

Anyway, if I got an internship this summer at Harvard Medical School, and perhaps send my research (hopefully) to siemens, or intel... will that boost it up a little bit? again, this is all in the works, so I'm not exactly sure.

Schools:
Washington University at St. Louis
University of Chicago,
Duke
Johns Hopkins (#1)
Northwestern

Let's hear 'em!!

8 views, still no brave souls?

I am only 13 but you sound like you have a great chance. I’m applying for boarding school right now and if you were my age youd def get in. on a higher level (college) you’ll be a shoe-in. Mostly it depends on what kind of college your looking at: ivy/university/college/community. GOOD LUCK!!!

Don’t know about those schools because I haven’t really researched them, but since your grades are so good (1/500?? WOW) i shouldn’t be a problem. As for leading positions, you might need a bit more, but since you’ve already founded the music program for the nursing home, you should be fine.

you’re probably good at johns hopkins

and i can tell that you’re secretly asian ;)

See, I told myself that too. Seriously, drop the activities that you dislike or become the president of them. (It goes either way!) Leadership doesn’t happen to you. You become a leader by your own efforts. Instead of worrying what colleges will think of you, go out there and do everything you possibly can do in HS at this point. You won’t regret it, period.

And, ECs aren’t everything. You can be indecisive within them. I have 3-4 different interests myself along with no plans to drop most of them. There’s other factors in the college admissions process that are made to help students show themselves from essays to recommendations. Really, stop worrying about it.

No chances, here. Just some advice.

You’re a little bit too hard on yourself. An UW G.P.A. of 4.0 and a rank of 1/500 isn’t really…that…weak.

Certainly, there are areas that you need to work on; but, assuming that you’re going to add a lot more to your bio by the time you apply (I mean, you’re really worried about it), you have a pretty good chance of getting into most of your listed colleges.

“yikes… PSAT 195 (i know, it’s horrible) I’m not planning on taking the SAT considering the above score.”

Huh? What the **** is this? You’re not going to take the SAT because you’re scared? What kind of reasoning is that? Is this why you haven’t taken any leadership positions? Jeez, stop torturing yourself man!!! A valedictorian with low self-esteem, weird.

You remind of me of someone I know.

The ACT is very similar to the SAT.

butterbattle:
about the PSAT score, I just figured since it’s pretty low, there’s really no point for me to work my butt off for another so-so score. And since ACT is an option, (and it’s somewhat easier for me) I just figured I’ll take that and spend all my time on one test and get a good score.
“A valedictorian with low self-esteem, weird.” I don’t want to sound arrogant. Believe me, past valedictorians have been the most stuck up people I’ve known…

asdfkl1: thanks for the advice. You’re abs. right. Leadership doesn’t just happen. I’ll seriously put some effort into them.

eating food: gee, what gave that away? math, violin… lol

In at all if you have that 33 on the ACT

And 1950 isn’t that bad. Don’t make fun of the general range of MY SATs. =P Really, when I took the PSAT, I did terribly. You’re not even CLOSE. Take the ACT if you’re that much more comfortable with it.

You should still take the SAT… I went up over 150pts from my PSAT score/projected junior SAT score by the time admissions deadlines rolled around and I didn’t study at all.

But you look pretty strong, anyway. Grades are good.

This is pretty irrelevent, but may I ask what school you go to? You sound like you’re in my area. lol. I’m in D211.

thanks guys… yeah I’m REALLY REALLY hoping for that 33  idk, we’ll see

lisa: i’m in D218

asdfjkl1: I’m not making fun of it  trust me, my sophomore PSAT scores were worse lol

lisa: ahh sorry. D128

Stop worrying. And take the SAT.
My highest PSAT score is almost 200 points lower than my real SAT score.

33 on act will bring, for example, JHU from a very high reach to a high match

Some schools prefer one over another though. So you might want to take both just in case, that way you’ve covered yourself.

^ oh yeah?? I thought they treated each equally… especially from the midwest, where the ACT is more common. Thoughts anyone?

“Some schools prefer one over another though.”

hmmmmm, that’s very rare.

Either way, the schools that ticktock applied to are mostly prestigious, tier 1 universities. Certainly, all of those will accept either the ACT or the SAT and they wouldn’t prefer one over the other.
