Does this community think I should apply to another community college or another college and then transfer to another one? I am in the first semester of college and I received the report today that I will no longer be helped financially through a school that costs roughly 60000 a year. It also said on the website if one does not achieve this GPA standard, the scholarship will disappear. I received a couple of Cs that made my grades under the threshold, giving an already hefty tuition some more load.
I no longer have my 20000 a year scholarship due to insufficient GPA Requirements. What should I do?
You lost the scholarship after one semester? That’s harsh. My daughters have a few gpa dependent scholarships but they assess after the first year, and even then there can be an appeal and a period to get the gpa back up. One daughter was just a shade under 3.0 and we picked her classes very carefully for the next semester and she got it up.
I think if the scholarship is gone, so is the school. You can’t afford $60k. If there is a community college near your home, that might be the right choice, or you could take a semester off and apply to another school. The issue may be if that 4 year college takes freshman transfers (some don’t) and you might try to get a transfer scholarship. You just have to look around to see if you are still considered a freshman (at some schools you are a freshman until you have 26 credits).
Sorry for your bad news.
What was your overall GPA?
Did you drop any courses?
I missed any discussion about what this student can afford. I don’t have enough information to make such a statement. OP, care to discuss the financial situation? Really hard to make any recommendations without it.
Is there a way to petition to keep the scholarship? Ask about that.
What was the GPA criteria for keeping your scholarship?
What was YOUR GPA?
And again…did you drop any courses during the fall term?
My GPA was just below the threshold of 3.0. This caused me to not have the scholarship any longer. It says on the website that this scholarship decision cannot be reversed I believe. I didn’t drop any courses. The tuition total was hard as it was with the scholarship, and not having the scholarship altogether is asking too much monetary support.
Most schools give you a semester to bring your gpa above the scholarship minimum before they rescind the award. You should contact the financial aid office immediately before giving up hope. Be prepared to submit your request in writing, noting any extenuating circumstances that affected your grades this semester. If the school is not willing to discuss this, which sounds unusual and harsh, then it’s time to move on. Contact some in-state options right away. Best of luck to you, I hope it works out!
Some of the HBCU have pretty harsh consequences for not meeting the gpa requirements to keep scholarhsips. The NAACP has been trying to help.
I have heard of some students transferring to their in-state public universities in a situation such as this. You should probably consider your in-state 4 year universities in addition to community college. @rohroh017 I didn’t pick up what state you are from so I am not sure what universities this would suggest as options.
If you are transferring after one semester they are likely to consider your high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores. If these were strong enough to get you a $20k scholarship to a private university, they may be good enough to help you with your transfer.
I know that this feels bad at this point, but I have seen students come back from worse and do very well. Good luck.
