I picked Wisconsin over Michigan...

So after research and two plus visits to both universities I have decided to pick Wisconsin- Madison over Michigan. Michigans academics are somewhat better but the Wisconsin campus took that factor away, especially since the Wisconsin academics are almost as good. I'm a big party freak so the fact that Wisconsin party ranking is ranked WAY higher then Michigan's only made me stronger with my decision. However, my grandmother is advising me to go to Michigan even though I seem to find Wisconsin way better... So is my decision to go to Wisconsin wrong? I mean the academics are neck and neck but the Madtown terrace, state street, sandwiched in between the two lakes sold it to me.

The roads in Madison are awful. So confusing.

Wrong way signs are posted so that you think you’re going the wrong way when you’re not.

Speed limit signs have this nonsense where they say something like “25 MPH from 7am to 4pm” but don’t say anything outside of those times.

There’s tons of 5 way and 6 way intersections.

There’s a lot of forks.

There aren’t traffic lights where you would expect there to be traffic lights.

The roads do this weird thing where the lane zig-zags while the road stays straight. It’s hard to explain until you see it.

All the one way streets seem to have only 1 one way sign. Ann Arbor there’s always multiple to make sure you don’t miss it.

There’s no consistent grid pattern. Neighborhoods might have an internal grid but it will be 45 degrees to a main road next to it. It makes left turns difficult.

Parking in downtown Madison sucks worse than parking in downtown Ann Arbor. Don’t bother trying between 8am and 8pm.

There’s plenty of other stuff too, but that’s just a taste of what to expect.

Don’t drive. It sucks.

Otherwise, Madison seems like a decent place. And as you said, the school is pretty good. Ignoring cost it doesn’t seem like a terrible decision if you really prefer Madison. But if you do I’m guessing you didn’t drive anywhere.

haha yea coming from Deleware I’m sure I won’t be driving. My reason for choosing Madtown over Michigan was simply because of the campus, Madison being a better college town, and the party factor. Besides that there isn’t really much of a difference.

bump bump…

What is the point of your post? You are past the decision point and made your choice. Wisconsin is a fine school, and I am sure based on your description of what is important to you, you will enjoy it.

“Besides that there isn’t really much of a difference.”

So then why are you posting on the Michigan board? Looking for justification for your choice? Good luck in Madison. It’s a nice city.

It was more of a post to get verification.

Get verification from your grandma. lol. Seriously, Wisky is a very good school. I’m sure you will have a great time there.

would you say Wisconsin is more of a work hard play hard school then Michigan? Wisco does have the better party rankings and good academics too.

If you just want to go to school to party, and it does appear that is your greatest concern about college at the moment, then Wisconsin is the better choice.

I’ve spent a lot of time in both towns. I like them both, a lot. I wouldn’t say Madison is a “better college town”; I’d rate them about equal in that regard. Wisconsin is definitely more of a party school–boozier, more beer, though you certainly can find those things in Ann Arbor as well if that’s your thing. But if a “big party school” atmosphere is important to you, Madison is where you should be.

Overall the academics are pretty similar, and people in Madison will try to convince you there’s no difference. In many fields that’s true, but it depends on your field. Michigan has more top-5 and top-10 ranked departments and programs, though most departments and program at Wisconsin are top-25, and some much better. Michigan also has a slightly better student-faculty ratio, somewhat fewer large classes, somewhat more small classes, and Michigan’s undergrads have somewhat stronger stats, by a non-trivial margin.

Most people I know who have gone to either of these schools loved their undergraduate experience. It sounds like you’ve already decided you prefer Wisconsin; if that’s the case, that’s where you should go.

“Party rankings” are totally arbitrary. How can someone say one state school as a whole parties more than another? There’s nowhere like Ann Arbor on a football saturday and greek life at Michigan is much more heavily emphasized than at Madison. The party scene is totally different. Enjoy Madison, it’s a nice town, but you’re not gonna get some sort of verification of your decision on the Michigan board. Michigan is the better academic school.

As for the college gameday experience, Scott Van pelt would disagree.

Also as for my chosen major, I will be studying Biology a major in which I’ve heard Wisconsin actually beats Michigan.

lol, whatever helps you sleep at night

lokus123. It’s obvious Wisconsin is the right school for you. You should start a new thread at the Wisconsin site in the CC Top Universities section. Oops, nevermind…

Why do Michigan students get so sad and uncomfortable when they see another school being better then them? I gave Michigan the edge in academics. When it comes to quality of life, social life, etc many rankings such as Fiske’s give Wisconsin the edge. Where at a age where many schools are the top when it comes to offering their students the best education. Where at a day when more then just academics matter so you can’t just talk on and on about Michigan’s academics. Many schools top them in social life, party rankings, quality of life, having the better college town, etc. If you guys disagree with Scott Van Pelt and Fiskes you might as well disagree with USNWR, Times, and all those other rankings. You guys only tend to respect rankings when its in favor of Michigan. One thing I can tell is from communicating with Michigan and Wisconsin students, I would give the edge to Wisconsin in having the kinder students. No offense. RJKOFNOVI’s previous post is a perfect example.
