I promise this is my last thread i start

but until then im sorry im urking you once more.....

during my freshman and 1st semester of sophomore in HS, i went through plights which was truly devastating. i was inundated w/ adversities and it might affect my chance. my average was about an 87. but what if my second semester of sophomore year and rest of junior year was all above 90's w/ 4 ap class all together,a job, college courses at cc, extracurriculars and i come from a low income family in a inclement area of living how will i be in the running for UCLA. PLEASE NO RUTHLESS ATTITUDE....IF YOU DONT WANNA ANSWER YOU DONT HAVE TO....THIS IS JUST TO THOSE WHO WANT TO HELP UNLUCKY HOPEFULS INTO UCLA
ps....im an oos

1) freshman year doesn’t matter, it’s generally seen as a transition period
2) an improving GPA is better than one that is stagnant or gets worse
3) UCLA does use holistic review, so being low-income does help you if you took advantage of what resources you did have (which it seems like you did). however, you had to have referenced or discussed that fact somewhere in your personal statement (i think)

anyway, don’t worry about it. what’s more concerning is whether you’ll get enough financial aid.

Your UC GPA doesn’t include your Freshman year. Just sophomore and Junior year UC-approved courses make up you UC GPA. (Grades in PE, driver’s ed, or other non-uc approved courses are not added into UC GPA.) You get 1 extra GPA point (up to 8 total) for each semester of UC approved honors and AP courses (no more than two horors/AP courses in sophomore year, and Honors English 10 does not get the extra point) Calculate it that way and see if you feel better.

thanks you guys…that was really helpful…my 1st semester of sophomore year wasnt to good either…my average was an 86 uw…that is killing me even though i took ap world and 2 honors classes… more people can help 2 :)

You still have 3 semesters, and 3 standardized tests to go before there’s a general shape of your application. If you have circumstances like low income and holding a job, then that adds to what would be the “other” category like ECs. If you think your GPA is low, then aim for a higher SAT, there’s still time.

You lowest uw average was 86 and that was freshman/1/2 soph year? 1st year won’t count and 86 is pretty darned good considering you had many “adversities”. You more than made up for it the subsequent years. My goodness, stop being so hard on yourself! I don’t know about your test scores, but of course you have a chance to get accepted to UCLA! (I suppose that you explained these things in your essay, that IS important.)

thanks you guys…in my first semester of sophomore year, my average was an 86…idk if these adversities are to severe but my mom was shot nine times causing her lack of mobility, few months after my mom was in the middle of a domestic abuse where i had to defend her and my dad threatening to disown me as a child,he left us and we had to make ends meet rendering me work while in school ,on top of that i live in a neighborhood in ny where kids raised there either drop out of school, become a drug dealer, prostitute or dead.

I bet your mom is proud. Even out of 55,000 applications, I think you will stand out. Good luck, olawunmi8 - and congratulations on your success so far.

Definitely write about your adversities in your essay. It WILL make you stand out.

Oh yea. Personal statements are the rage, now that holistic admissions is in place. While not a cure-all for bad stats, an effective personal statement can work wonders on admissions.

what are the personal statements prompt usually about. and thanks for all the advice

Jinobi, the op’s stats may end up right in there with UCLA’s average. I am not a sucker for every sad story, but having your mother shot nine times is just a little bit unusual, wouldn’t you agree?

she really was shot…she went to nigeria for her bros funeral(she didnt pay for the trip)…on her way back (since nigeria is now a defiled country) armed robbers barricaded her car with her other bro…she refused to give up her stuff so they shot her and her bro…um and it was those guns that shot pellets but these pellets werent ordinary…they were lead filled and were 3x as big as the normal pellet size according 2 the doctor…4 still remain in her body…this really affecte her cause some were close to her spine and they cant do surgery to remove it cause they are not in one spot…the one in her leg caused her much pain.

Man. Your poor mother, man.

**** my gpa will get worse after frosh year (jr year hahaha)

narcissa i didnt fathom what you wrote

Dude, you have a good shot at UCLA. Assuming this is the 100-point GPA scale, you have fared well even through adversity. An 86 is like a “B” average. I have talked with many UC counselors and admissions people and trust me they like it. I had adversity during my sophomore year, which dropped my GPA from a 4.0 to lower than usual. But those were the only two semesters of my high school years where I did not hit a 4.0 and I have taken 9 APs. So, they were mildly impressed that I was able to keep to Bs and some As. So, I guess with your specific case, you should be fine. Like 50%<X<75%. If you did or will do well on your SATs, then don’t fear.

One thing though it does matter from which type of HS you come from and how you rank with others in your school.

Sympathies for the Nigerian mom.

I Hope I Have A Great Shot…its My Dream School…and Narcissa Pl Explain Your Statement And Adultparentmom Do U Believe Me Now?

BUMP please
