I started writting my essay about my father, who came to this country as an immigrant, but i was told that you should write the essay about yourself. I have a couple of ideas that i can use, but i really want to write the essay about my father. Should i write the essay about my father, or myself?
Your father’s not the one applying to college.
You can talk about the lessons you’ve learned from your father, about the value system you’ve gotten from him.
But the point is to give the colleges a reason to say yes to YOUR application. It’s not about writing ability so much as a peek into who you are. So you-- your thoughts, your values, your personality-- should be the focus.
It’s fine to use your dad as a backdrop, but make sure the essay showcases you. What have you learned from his immigrant experience? Are you the person you are today b/c of him and his experiences? Has his immigrant experiences impacted your choices, goals, plans, richly enhanced you from a cultural perspective?
