Any other seniors have no idea what college they will choose. If you have any advice let me know I’m deciding between:
Northeastern University
Binghamton University (Scholars Program)
Ohio State University (12k scholarship)
University at Albany (4900 scholarship)
University of Rhode Island (12k + honors program)
University of Miami
University of Massacheusetts (10k)
-Uconn (haven’t got accepted yet)
A little background : the cheapest school would be albany then binghamton then I believe ohio state or uri. Binghamton doesn’t have my major and I don’t think albany does either. Northeastern is a 6 year program but I can’t afford it unless I take out loans, my parents can pay about 20,000 - 25,000 a year . What is the smartest decision I really can’t decide
Please don’t take this wrong, but why did you apply to a school which did not offer your major? Are you dead-set on your major, or are you flexible/uncertain?
As many, many experienced posters have repeatedly warned here on CC, DEBT is not a good thing. It drags you down for many years, can threaten relationships, and certainly has an opportunity cost that prevents you from doing what you want with your life after graduation.
Sounds like if the two cheapest don’t have your major, then Ohio State or Rhode Island would be the next choices. Have you looked at the curriculum for each for your major? Does one school take an approach you like better than the other? Are there more opportunities for internships at one of them? Have you visited and do you have a preference in terms of size, location, general atmosphere? If you’re not sure of your major, do these schools have options you might be interested in? And of course, how much in loans would you have to take out for each school - for all four (or six) years? You can only take out @ $27,000 as a student and that’s probably a good limit. Don’t even consider a school where you end up $50,000 or more in debt, especially when you have alternatives.
Can you list, for each university
(tuition, fees, room, board) - (scholarships, grants)?
(and keep the mention of Honors program or not).
The CC community will then help you with a cost/value analysis.
Well for physical therapy people usually major in exercise science or kinesiology. Which both binghamton and albany do nt have, but they have biology which I could major in and still go to physical therapy school. Here are what the prices would be around. I’m not sure exactly but I can give a range
Binghamton - 22,000 + scholars program
Albany - 16,000 + possible honors college they asked me to apply I got a letter home saying in a presidents scholar or something like that
Rhode Island - 28,000 + honors college. I kind of don’t want to go to Rhode Island though it was just a safety
Ohio state - 26,000
Uconn- no decision but it’s kind of my favorite except it’s expensive
Umass- 29,000
Northeastern - 6 year program (my parents would have to take out around 30k+ a year) 58,000
Miami- 52,000? Around there. Parents would have to take out 30k
Check the offerings in the SUNYs’ biology departments to see if exercise biology exists there. Some schools have it embedded in their biology departments.
Right now, your best choice is Binghamton. Excellent academics, advantages of the scholars program, stronger than Albany, and within budget.
Does Ohio State have Kinesiology or Exercise Science? It’d be contender for #2 since it seems within budget. Can you apply for one of the honors programs, or is that invitation-only? I think you’d qualify for one of the honors programs though… check.
Didn’t you get some FA from Northeastern or Miami?
Are you waiting for more (beside Uconn) or is that it?
It sounds like your budget is 22-25K per year, am I right?
Hopefully you’ll get something from Uconn.
Start organizing overnight visits at Ohio State, Bing, and another one.
Make sure you’ve applied to the honors programs at tOSU.
And yeah the budget is around the low 20ks I don’t know if that’s a lot but I guess that is all they could pay. Since I have to go grad school anyways I guess it’s ok if I save money now
Do an overnight at Bing. See if you can do an overnight at tOSU (did you get Honors/apply to?) If UConn is OOS, it’s unlikely to be Bing’s level financially.
