So, I've started like 10 threads in the last 3 days, cause Im really stressed out and depressed right now. Basically, I am a senior and I am applying as an industrial engineering major. My parents are forcing me to stay instate and the only IE schools in California (where i live) are stanford, berkeley, usc, and cal poly SLO (my parents wont let me go to cal poly pomana). I have a 2130 (1380 cr+m), and a 3.75 UW gpa. As you can see, this knocks me out of every schools except cal poly, and even cal poly is a maybe. Thats not the worst part. They keep telling me I'm not competitive and that I should have tried harder, which really pisses me off cause I tried really hard in the maths and sciences, the only subjects I think are important. I NEVER got below an A in the sciences, and I took AP chem and chem honors. I also got mostly A's in the maths. It was stupid history and lit that screwed me over. i got C's in AP us history and B's in a couple of lit classes. Anyway im getting a bit off topic here, but should i just go to community college if i get rejected from the 4 schools i listed above, and try transferring out to berkley, usc, or cal poly. Or should i try convincing my parents to let me go to Virginia Tech, where I think i can get in. They already said no to VT, but I think once i get rejected from all the instate schools they will be disillusioned and let me go to VT. Also, if i do go to community college, is it possible for me to transfer to good out of state schools like UIUC, georgia tech, virginia tech, etc? thanks

Your parents are really limiting you, I think you should definitely have a talk with them to let you go out of state. Also, a 2130 is a great score and you have lots of time still to increase it(you can probably increase it by ~100)- this would increase your shot at the California schools you stated. I’m not familiar with transferring from Community college, but why exactly do your parents not want you to leave the state?? Not to be rude, but your parents sound like douchebags saying that you should have tried harder - thats probably the worst thing they could say to a student.

@thegrant no, i can not improve it. 2130 was my HIGHEST scores. i was expecting 2050, as that was my highest score. I havent practiced the SAT since over a year, and I took a diag like 2 weeks ago, and I went to like a 1850. i forgot all my vocab and a lot of grammar rules.

idk know my parents want me to stay instate. they tell me to take advantage of instate tuition, but they spent 240k on my sisters useless degree at USC (she got no scholarship), but they still paid for her. They dont want me to leave because they are afraid I’ll only come back for winter and summer and they dont want that. they want me to come home monthly or atleast every 2 months.

What about the rest of UCs and CalStates? Also some privates of lower caliber in California?

240K?!?!?! WHAT?!?

You have to let them know that your grown up and that it’s just a stepping stone towards adulthood. They are putting you in a tough situation and you should let them know that in the case you dont get accepted to any of those schools(which you probably would get accepted to Cal Poly SLO), that you will be screwed over by going to a community college. If anything, at least get Ponoma on ur school list(IDK why they wouldnt want u there)

@seal16 like i said, Industrial engineering is only offered at the 4 schools I listed above in california + cal poly pomona (but thats a big no no from my parents. its regarded as complete ■■■■ where i live).

@thegrant wait, why would i be screwed if i go to community college. i can just transfer right? also, 1. my parents wont let me go to pomona cause its not really highly regarded. and 2. i wouldnt want to go to pomona either. i would just go to community college and transfer out. its not known outside california. and i want to go to a school that is atleast relativity known.

@thegrant yeah, usc cost of attendance is a bit over 60k a year. hence u get all the USC jokes

Lots of bright kids go to CC and tranfer to top UCs. But I think you have good shots at the UCs. Your SAT scores are great.
I personally wouldn’t pay for VT either.

CalState East Bay, San Jose State, U Of San Diego, and USC all have this major.

@seal16 yeah, i only listed the ones my parents will allow me to go. and i listed USC in the list.

@DrGoogle why wouldnt you pay for VT? its a good school in my opinion.

@toesockshoe: Will your parents let you attend a CC for 2 years and then transfer?? From what you posted so far, it sounds like they are not willing to let you attend a CC especially if they consider the Cal Poly’s beneath you. Is there anyway your Guidance Counselor could sit down with your parents and explain to them your options and why their restrictions are unrealistic. I feel for your situation and I am glad that when it came time for my sons to apply, that I allowed them to make their own choices and was supportive of their choices… Good Luck and I hope your parents come around.

It is entirely possible that your parents spent all of their money on your sister’s education, and now think that the in-state publics are your only option. This means that if you want to go somewhere else, you need to find a place where your GPA and test scores will qualify you for a true full ride so that you don’t need their help or approval. There are several threads on that topic and related topics in the Financial Aid Forum. Start with this one:

@Gumbymom they would prefer me to go to a CC than go to cal poly because they want me to end up at usc or berkeley or another really good school. they would prefer the “second chance” i would get from going to a cc, but they still wouldnt be thrilled about it.

Sad story very similar to one of my friends. If you don’t have your own money to apply, apply where they want you to.

Someone with a 2130 SAT score should probably not be considering CC unless you can get into a place where you are guaranteed entry to the UC of your (parents’) choice.

The thing that bothers me the most is for your parents to be beating you up like this. They really have no right. It’s abuse.

It seems from your other posts that what you really want to do is an accounting. CSUN has a very good accounting program and few of top level executives at the well known company I work for went to CSUN.

@seal16 I am still not sure between accounting and industrial engineering. im gonna apply as an industrial engineering major, and if i dont like it, ill switch to accounting and transfer to another for junior and senior year. does that plan work?

I would apply to industrial engineering schools on your list and also to CSUN accounting. Call it your safety.

@seal16 yeah, i was also thinking of doing that for a couple of other schools. thanks for the advice!

toesockshoe, I don’t know much about VT, I rather my kid goes to CC and transfer up. I don’t like to pay OOS price for VT. What about Purdue or Michigan, you could get in OOS. I rather pay OOS for those schools.

Nothing wrong with VA Tech - it is a great school and ranks ahead of Stanford and just behind Berkley for Ind Engr (US News), and a lot less expensive than Stanford. But it is a long way from home, and I’d expect there are good IE schools closer to you. If you’re thinking long term, you can go to grad schools at any of your parents’ preferred schools.
