I really hate when the people on these boards say:
That is a really bad GPA, or SAT score…when, clearly in comparison to the rest of the US population, it is like very great!
Your thoughts?

its true, there are loads of people who are ecstatic to get 600 or above, but here its simply 'unacceptable'. ;)

Someone, no offense to them, put that a 3.97 UW GPA is bad...I mean I know it is for Cornell, but I don't, in my book, see a 3.97 UW as horrible! Imagine all the people that are failing, or near failing! Of course, they aren't applying to Cornell, but then again it is just a prespective. At our school they are weighed grades, and the only way to get a 4.0 GPA is to have a 100! So, to all the people that think that a 4.0 is "bad," how would you do here? Not so hot...I can say that...

I know, it is sad in some ways. I know I'll be ecstatic if I score 600+ on math, and people here probably think I'm inferior

and why does everyone think they go to a nationally ranked school, not everybody does

I totally agree with you crzybacardi.

I think some people are so full of it. The only ones, that I've said before, are places like Exeter; that is the only one that I think would actually "help" your chances. Get over yourself, and do well...that is the only key to success.

Some people tell themselves that their grades/scores "suck" because that's the only way to keep themselves motivated...and they know that those grades/scores must be improved to get into their dream schools...I don't think anyone does it just to be cocky

"I don't think anyone does it just to be cocky"

It seems that way, in my opinion. Some people do it just to show off, it seems.

Yeah, people here with below a 1400 SAT score are a rarity, but that's a pretty amazing score for most people.

imagine all the people who don't go to college. sure, a 1400 is a good score in comparison to all scores, but for specific schools, it might not be. you have to things in perspective, and it's not helpful to say things like "yeah!!! you have a GREAT chance!!! good luck!!!"

hate is a strong word. let's substitute it for 'annoyed' or 'dislike'. But I agree; i suggest not posting/reading about college chances. And the weight scale for gpa's/difficulty of courses/difficulty of teacher are all different for other people, i think 3.97 uw is great, not bad at all. bad is on the extreme side. :)

INSECURE.

the one word to describe the majority of the kids who post on the "what are my chances" forum.

its all relative though. i was chairing a MUN conference and the kids wanted to know what my sat score was since i got into UCLA. i told them "my score isnt that good... i got a 1330." a majority of the kids were surprised, as if 1330 is really hard to get (well, from an average student, yes). one even countered "a 1330 is really good!"

remember that the average honors student DOES NOT even know about CC, much less posts on it.

Shrug. This board self-selects from among the obsessed so the skewed perspective is not surprising.

However, as one of the most prolific posters on this board over the past three years, I will say that I've come to avoid the WAMC threads as being toxic. There are far too many cases of the ignorant leading the blind. Imo, the most dangerously misleading words you can offer on this board are "You're in." Read a cycle or two of acceptances and rejections and you will become very wary of making blanket pronouncements. Or believing them when your read them.

i have to second the opinion above.

i think SAT as being unfair.

you can be really smart, or if you are from a western culture, verbal will be very easy for you.

however, for ppl with eastern background, verbal is very challenging.

Lol. At my school, a 1200 is literally the top 1%. So be happy people. LOL.

ok, i am just wondering.... WHY ARE STATS IN DIS FORUM SO GODLIKE. Seriously. I mean..my GPA is pretty high (4.3) but my SAT I was 1290. I am actually crazy happy about my grades and even my SAT score. But this forum, people say like," I have nothing much, just a 4.8 and a 1450" and think dos kind of SAT I and Gpa cant get them in Stanford or IVy's. I think in my UCLA visit people say they got a 4.1 and a SAt of 1200 and got accepted. People here say to people who have stats much more superior than an average UCLA acceptee that they are reach. geez..

I don't think people are being cocky. Most people here are applying to the top of the top, and therefore must be the best of the best. They simply know their competition.

Interesting table. I know it's a little old, but it really gives perspective on how exceptional some people on this board are.

Either 1) a lot of people are exaggerating or 2) this forum has a lot of the top 1%

It's all relative...no need to get offended that people have different standards and abilities
