He is a good coach and seems like a nice and honest man. His abilities as coach are clear. He pushed top teams such as Syracuse, Kansas and OSU and beat MSU in EL and he did so with relatively little talent. I cannot recall the last time Michigan had a top 30 recruiting class in Basketball. And here is my problem with coach Beilein. Why isn't Michigan recruiting top 20 or even top 10 classes? Is he not a good recruiter? Should Michigan hire an assistant coach who can recruit?

I don't really care for Basketball. Football and Hokey are more fun if you ask me, but it would be nice to at least be competitive in Basketball. As it stands, we are just average.

He is not a good recruiter. Michigan has been at a recruiting disadvantage ever since the probation that came with Chris Webber being on the take. Michigan and Michigan State used to compete for top Michigan recruits - some years MSU would get the better talent and other years U-M got the top talent. As a result, both schools were usually competitive and in some years they would compete for conference championships. Ever since Mateen Cleaves took the ill-fated recruiting trip to Detroit in the back seat of Maurice Taylor’s SUV (compliments of Ed Martin), it has been all for MSU and none for U-M. When Bill Martin had to replace Amaker, I think he resigned himself to the fact that he could not find someone who could compete with MSU for recruits and looked for someone who could make the most of mediocre talent and fight to keep out of the bottom division of the Big Ten. Beilein was the answer. He is a good coach and seems like a nice and honest man. His abilities as coach are clear. U-M is not a basketball school and this result is OK for most of the fans.
