I really like this school, what are my chances to get in at DBU?

Okay, so I been keeping a keen interest on this private university called Dallas Baptist University. The things that I adore about this institutio would have to be the class size, the majors they have (interested in enviornmental science, or journalism, communications, etc.). I even gave them a call and asked what should I know about their admissions. Well they told me if I apply to their school by the priority deadline (which is November 1st), chances are I might get accepted and more scholarship opportunities are offered to me. They can also use the super scoring method for their academic scholarships as well. I want to join this school because I’ve been reading their facts on their orignal website. It’s considered safe, fun, and some of the pictures of their campus look magnificent. But before I can make any more strong opinions for this school, I’ve looked up their requirements on CollegeBoard to see what they’re looking for:

Very Important

Academic GPA
Application Essay
Character/Personal Qualities
Class Rank
Religious Affiliation or Commitment
Rigor of secondary school record
Standardized Test Scores
Talent/Ability

Important

Extracurricular Activities
Interview

Considered

Alumni Relation
Level of Applicant’s Interest
Recommendations
Volunteer Work
Work Experience

And I also looked at their original website. According to them, they are considered a Baptist college (Christ faith learning). Now I am a Catholic so I know that they would definitely want to know my religious affiliation. And according to their first year’s admission page:

“Dallas Baptist University complies with all applicable federal and state non-discrimination laws and does not engage in unlawful discrimination on the basis of age, gender, disability, veteran status, race, color, or national origin in any employment practice, admissions, education program, or educational activity. Under federal and state law, the University may discriminate on the basis of religion in order to fulfill its purposes.”

I may not know much of what their campus is really like so my goal for October is to visit their Campus on preview day, which is October 10. They said I will be able to meet their professors, see the class sizes, visit the dorms, the cafeteria, and get the whole idea of their personal mission. Actually, I am a little nervous. I want to ask my sister if she can take me to that school since she doesn’t work on Columbus Day and I don’t have a school day either so that’s a good opportunity for me to get to know the school. Then I will be able to buy some time to write that 250 admission essay prompt: Why do I want to attend Dallas Baptist University? Normally I would say this school fits my needs but that won’t be enough to impress the school of what I’m made of. I could talk about the student body interests me, but I would also need another reason why so I figured as much visiting them will give me a central idea to writing the essay.

Still, I’m worried if my sister will assume I will attend a school that is different from my religion. My question is what do I need to consider about these kind of schools? I want to make the right decision of considering this school into my top four. And i hope none of my family members will think different of me just because I want to visit a school that is highly religious. It’s not that my family hates religon. We are indeed a Catholic family. I’m just afraid what the school may ask if we have a strong connection in our religion.
Also, I noticed on the considered part Alumni Relation, and recommendations. My Algebra II teacher is an alumni of the campus. Maybe he can write me a letter of recommendation for DBU

And I’ve volunteered a lot of times in the past since freshman. Will they also like the community service I did?

I am in the top ten percent. I have a weighted GPA of 3.9 and unweighted 4,1. My class rank is a 17 out of 341 students, and I taken the SAT a couple of times. (I can send the university my scores when I attend their Preview Day so I don’t have to pay to send their scores I called them today and they said it was okay since I need to send my application in by November 1st. That’s good because they can superscore my tests)

You sound like a good fit for that school. I suggest you put together a list of some other colleges to apply to so you can compare costs once you are accepted.

That’s what I’m doing. I’m confident that I see myself in this school since I’m determing what are my top four choices based on how much money I get, the majors they provide, the size, activities they have, and other areas of interest (I list my needs by priority from most important to least important

My teacher also said it was a great idea for me to apply to some private schools because most of them will likely offer me some money.

Here are my three private school choices

  1. Texas Wesleyan University
  2. Dallas Baptist University (what I mentioned above)
  3. Texas Christian University (I will be competing for their community scholars program. It’s a big deal because finalists will win a full ride to this selective school)

I don’t know of anyone who ever gets rejected from DBU. I think you will be fine.

DO be aware there are some old school Southern Baptists around who still think of Catholicism as a cult. Trust me on this one. You do not want to be the “project child” of classmates and staff who consider it their main goal to convert you.

I’m not sure how the school will look on your religious affiliation when considering your application. Most of the kids who go there have a VERY strong passion to be in a ministry position. I have a friend who works in admissions–I can send her a PM and ask her for you if you would like?

If you can get past the religious part I think you will like the school. They give some strong merit aid and need based aid and really seem to go out of their way to make school affordable. The campus is beautiful and I love their house style dorms.

Texas Wesleyan—have you visited? If so, what did you think?

TCU-- they give GREAT merit aid and need based aid to local DFW kids. Our campus regularly has 2-4 seniors who are offered almost a full ride. The religious factor at TCU is going to be a LOT less of a factor and I think you will have MANY more opportunities at this school.

Are you trying to stay in the DFW metroplex? Or would you consider schools within a 2 hour radius?

EDITED TO ADD: (response from my friend who works at DBU)
She will be required to take an OT survey class and NT survey (Old Testament and New Testament) Depending on her major, she may have upper division religion requirement. I would encourage her to come on a campus tour and get a student’s perspective. She can call me 214-333-5170 and I can transfer her to the undergrad admissions office to schedule it.

Both, I’m applying to school that I’m most likely to get in and yes, I am also applying to schools within a two radius.

Also, what do you mean “Catholicism as a cult”? and do they really test on your religion?

Texas Wesleyan is a really beautiful campus, I just saw their new clocktown architecture. It’s small, offer a lot of scholarships, and has some of the majors I am interested (except Environmental Science sadly).

I was thinking of visiting the campus myself either on Tuesday October 4 or on their preview day

Are you going to live at home or on campus?

Texas Wesleyan might be ok “on” the campus but there is absolutely nothing around it.

I don’t think DBU will test you on your religion but you will have to take some religious classes.

Live at campus (hopefully. I mean it will depend if I choose a school that is much farther from the DFW area)
I want to apply by the end of their priority deadline so that I can better my chances for their scholarships/admissions as well as other schools priority deadlines

What does “project child” mead?

@Fred37196 — probably a bad choice of words. I simply meant some students may look at you as someone they need to convert to a different religion.
