I really messed up...failed final...

i just failed half of my ap calc ab exam (the multiple choice part). i failed it so terribly that I probably would have gotten a better score by randomly guessing. my score was a 9/50. I have no idea how this happened, but i think i may have misbubbled the answers in the scantron...but the teacher won't let me fix it.

the 2nd half is not graded yet (its free response), and the last day to drop this class is tomorrow. And to top it all off, i applied for the wrong major(im realizing this now) and was accepted into pre math.

And i already sent my sir in last week so i can't change majors.

So...do i drop this class, or what? i'm going to talk to the teacher today...but I was doing okay in this class until the final...

Absolutely go speak to your teacher ASAP. Especially if you feel you messed up the scantron bubbles. Maybe the teacher will let you retake it. Otherwise, ask her where you stand in the class if you do in fact fail the test. See if you can squeeze a C out of the class. If you can maintain at least a C, I think you’ll be ok.

Out of curiosity, you should have had some sort of feel for the test as you were taking it. Did it seem particularly hard to you? Did you feel like you didn’t know the answers as you were doing the problems? If so, if you feel that you can’t get at least a C in the class, you may need to drop it.

If you drop a class then you are required to notify UCSB. You might want to call them and talk it over before you drop the class, because it may be grounds to rescind your admission. But so is failing a class. At some HS the counselors are good at working the the UC adcoms and so you might want to see if your counselor can/will help you with this. BTW since its mid-April is this test something that will determine your grade on your HS transcript or is it just a test during the semester?

If you drop the class then letting UCSB know right away (as you are required to do) gives some room to maneuver. Maybe they’ll require you to take a make-up class during the summer. But if you wait until they see it on your transcript in August it will be too late to do anything should dropping it affect your admission.

As far as changing your major from pre-math, don’t panic. Most college students change their major once or twice, and as long as you’re changing to another major in the College of Letters and Science its as easy as filling out a form once you’re on campus. You might even be able to do it at orientation this summer. But even if you can’t, being a pre-math major does prevent you from taking any classes you want; nor does it require taking math classes. As a pre-math major you’ll probably get a sheet with recommended classes that pre-math majors take so that they get fully admitted to the major, but since you’ve decided that’s not the major for you feel free to completely ignore that info and get the set of classes for what you ARE interested in.

Listen to me.

DON’T DROP THE CLASS. If you can squeek by with a C in that class, keep it.

A D in the class does not mean your admission gets rescinded–as long as you’ve already completed the A-G requirements for mathematics, you should be in the clear. . .just notify the admissions counselor if you do end up with a D in the class.

Hope things work out.

Hey if you want to change major, you still can lol! I submitted my SIR a while ago and I was still able to switch my major. Unless you’re going into some engineering or other hardcore majors, you should still be able to change it before may 1st.

Thanks everyone! i will not be dropping the class.

I learned that my teacher caps the final grades-it will be entered in as a 60% since it was technically a mock ap exam. I am confident that I can bring that up to at least a 70%, instead of the >>50% I thought I was stuck with. This grade is for the new quarter and is the only thing in the gradebook currently.

While i was taking the test I knew how to do a lot of the problems. I probably made many careless mistakes…my parents want me to get a tutor, so I will be doing that since i don’t want to take any chances. unfortunately he will not let me fix the scantron and there is no retake, but i am sure I will be fine now.

And i don’t know what major i want, so I guess i’ll just stay in pre math for now.
