I really need a honest answer

Well, I will try to make this quick. I was did not have to work at all in the middle school and could pull of A's and B's, but when I got to freshman year, I was going through some rough times so I ended up failing 2 classes ( I retook them and made B's.) I was taking honor level classes. Sophmore year I tried hard and made mostly A's and a few B's, after that I took IB level classes for my junior year and pulled off mostly A's. My progress is still going good but thanks to my messed up freshman year my GPA sits at a 2.9 unweighted, since those 2 failed classes still count as credit. Is it possible for me to get into a state university, my guidance counselor reassured me I could, but I wanted a 2nd opinion and not blindly trust my guidance counselor. Will the admissions look past my messed up freshman year, maybe go as far as to drop those 2 failed classes? I also have some other questions

1.) I was thinking of also trying to apply to NYU, and I was wondering if their is a point in trying to apply to it.

tldr;

I messed up my freshman year, but after my 10th grade year I started to work hard and made mostly A's and some B's in Honor/ IB level classes, and I was wondering if the admissions will look past my freshman year.

Also my SAT score is pretty solid.

Thanks !
