I really need advice!

So I'm planning on applying to Michigan soon. I visited and fell in love instantly. I'm even considering to change my college sports allegiance from Ohio State to Michigan! I know I'm on the low end of virtually every stat.

My dilemma is: Should apply EA or wait for my SAT, ACT, and GPA to go up and apply RD. I'm thinking my SAT should go above 1900, ACT to around 30, and GPA to around 3.75 or 3.8. Take into consideration that I'm at a very competitive, private, college prep school. Lastly, I am applying for a Cellular/Molecular Biology Major which should correlate well with my 800 and 5 that you see below. Thanks!:

SAT I: 1870 - 640M/600CR/630W
Didn't really study at all, I know I can do better.

ACT: 28, Didn't study either. Also didn't sleep :)

SAT II: 800 Biology M

AP's. 5 AP Biology

GPA uw/w: 3.7 Weighted, school doesn't report unweighted
Increasing semester over semester throughout highschool career. (Junior and senior year only 4.0)

Classes: 4 AP's, 10 Honors Classes, rest regular

ECs:
Founded Key Club at my School and am currently PResident
Member of 4 other clubs, holding a position in another
Varsity Soccer, Tennis, JV Basketball
Volunteered at the Library tutoring kids and helping behind the circulation desk

Awards/honors:
MVP twice in Tennis and once in basketball.
Gold Key Recipient in Scholastic Arts & Writing Competition for Photography
Excellence in Geometry, Most improved in Honors modern world history
High Honor Roll for 3 years

Excellent Essay
2 Very Good Teacher Recs
1 Excellent Counsler Rec

If you want to you can apply RD. But keep in mind, more people apply RD than EA, making it likely that it will be more competitive as well.

I know, that’s what I’m leaning towards. So are the stats listed above going to be insufficient for considered admission? Are the improvements THAT much better? On the visit they said that I could send in my October SAT and ACT after the scores have been received, leaving me with just a non-updated GPA.

Apply EA you may get deferred, but then you’ll be able to send in 1st semester grades. But EA is the way to go. You really have nothing to lose. Good luck!!!

Lisa, I heard UM does defers a lot of people. You don’t think there is a chance for a rejection do you?

There is definitely a chance for a rejection. Your SAT and ACT are below the 25th percentile for the most recently admitted class, and your 3.7 weighted GPA is still below the average UNweighted GPA of 3.83. Your ECs are a little above average, and your stats are below average. You have a chance but it’s not a slam dunk by any means.

I agree. Do you see any advantage to applying RD over EA and updating with new SAT/ACT/GPA after probably getting deferred?

U OF M rarely declines EA (at least last year they didn’t) and your numbers at this moment look strong enough. At the most I think you’ll be deferred. EA shows that you are very interested. Trust me EA is the way to go. But the choice in the end is yours Good Luck!!! And GO BLUE!!!

If you are willing to risk the application fee, then I would apply EA. I think U-M is a reach for you. I would consider anyone with unweighted GPA of less than 3.7 to be a reach absent other factors. I assume that if your weighted GPA is 3.7 then the unweighted GPA would be less. Your test scores would probably be adequate if the GPA were higher; higher scores may or may not make a difference. Unfortunately SAT II’s are not given much consideration. I suspect you will be deferred then waitlisted and then never leave the waitlist but I could be wrong. You never know unless you apply. Good luck.

2 things

Does everyone that posts a chance thread on here actually go to a “omg really super hard competitive college prep school” or do they just all think/say that? I swear that line is in every chance thread I read.

Also, not studying for your ACT/SAT is a lame excuse. What are you even gonna study? I didn’t think most people near the top of their class bothered.

I think you are a pretty big reach. OOS and a low GPA and your test scores aren’t great.
