So I was just wait-listed (basically rejected) from my state school (UVa) and now I have two options left. Either pay an extremely large amount of money to go to U of Michigan or pay only a fraction of that to go to another state school (Virginia Tech). I want to major in business, more specifically finance. What would you do if you were in my place?

Option 1: Pay 200k+ over 4 years for a good undergraduate "name" and attend UMich and maybe get into Ross then maybe make bank. That's all contingent on getting into Ross of course...

Option 2: Pay less than 100k over 4 years for a mediocre at best state school and go to pretty low tier business school

Please help! Any input or opinions are appreciated!!! Thanks.

Mediocre - hmmm. VT is a much better engineering school than UVA. According to Business Week VT is ranked 54 in the country. While that is not UVA it is also not mediocre. UMich is not worth the extra $.

As a VA resident, you have the guaranteed transfer program if you start at an approved cc. Not as great as heading to UVa as a freshman, but an option.

I think Virginia Tech. First “finance” decision you have to make should be one where you actually come out ahead financially. VT is a perfectly good school. Do well and you could transfer later if you like. If you don’t mind staying home, then start at CC.

I am having a rough time deciding which college to go to, these are the universities i have been accepted to so far:

-CSU Longbeach
-Cal Poly Pamona
-CSU Northridge
-Cal State LA
-California Lutheran University (recieved regents scholarship)
-Loyola Marymount University
-Pepperdine University
-UC Irvine
-UC Santa Barbara
-UC Riverside
-UC Santa Cruz
-UC San Diego
-Still waiting for my decision at USC, but i was denied by UCLA, so I’m expecting a rejection letter from USC also

Anyways, I’m trying to consider prestige, price, and location. I applied undecided but I’m thinking to get into a field of business. Which schools should I visit or consider to go to???

^ it’s kind of late in the game to be asking about a dozen colleges. Presumably you applied because you knew they had something close to what you want- and decent enough. OP’s question is both common and valid, in VA- because UVA has such a strong rep and, for many, VT is also beloved. The competition in VA for the flagship is extraordinary and many tippy top performers can’t get in.

Well I just listed the ones I was accepted to, I need to decided which one I am going to attend by May, its still march. I applied to many cause they were free. Anyways, I know I’m not going to attend a Cal State. While living in LA, I’m thinking of a good school I can attend that has an adequate business program with a decent level of prestige. I was thinking Pepperdine or UCSD, but I’m not sure.

Virginia Tech. No matter what, I’d hate to be in so much debt for going to college; it doesn’t really make sense to me. Besides, Virginia Tech is not a bad school at all. Its not as if its some rundown community college or something. You could always transfer to UVa after taking some courses there if you’re not satisfied.
