I’m in the middle of applying to UCSD; and I currently hit a minor roadblock. I have completed all areas on the Igetc sheet…..well except one. See I received a D in a philosophy course……but after I filled out the application online it stated

“Other Areas:
Based on the courses you reported, you have fulfilled the course requirement for this subject with a Grade of C or better.”

This really confused me; I’m not sure if I should take another humanities course to fulfill that section on Igetc or if I “technically” completed it already.

I thought “D’s” don’t count….

I was going to take another humanities course next semester then become igetc certified. Or am I able to become certified now since it’s saying that I have completed my English, math, and “other areas”?

Oh and as a side or second question; I emailed a counselor at my college and she told me that I have 35 credits completed. She included that philosophy course. Do I really have 35 credits completed or is it really 32? (the philosophy course is 3 credits)

Sorry if I wasn’t able to come off clearly, but I’m very stressed and confused. Thanks for your help.

Hmmmm, D’s don’t count. Perhaps you fulfilled that section of IGETC with a different class that you didn’t know applied to that section? Go physically sit down with a counselor, and communicate this to him/her.

A D will still give you the units for class even if it won’t transfer as having taken the course (if that makes sense. You do need a C or better for it to count for IGETC). On a four point grading scale, it is worth a one when calculating GPA. So yes, you have 35 units. If you repeat the course you received a D in and receive a C or higher in it, you will still only have 35 units as the D will not be counted into your GPA (course repetition).

Are you sure it mentioned that the section you had completed was for humanities? From what I recall, the only part of the UC application that mentioned “you have completed X with a C or better based on reported courses” is the one that mentions English and math. I don’t remember any part of it talking about humanities.

What I have gathered from that part in the UC application is that you have met their minimum level of requirements, but that isn’t the same as IGETC. So I think to fulfill/complete IGETC, you’d need to retake the class.

How odd, mine had nothing about that, at least not that I can remember. I can’t pull it up right now to double check since I’m on my work computer (and my new laptop is still in the process of having all files from my old laptop transferred), but when I last looked at it, there was only English and math on mine.

However, I also took an obscene amount of units and my application for Winter 2010 was more of a formality to resubmit updated information (I was deferred from Fall 2009 to Winter 2010, long story, but they asked me to submit the app again even with it in writing I was offered Winter 2010 admission shrugs). I might have overlooked that in my rush to just get the app submitted. I already knew I more than met all requirements quite some time ago. I’m curious now, though, so I will look it up when I get home from class late tonight :).

Anywho, either way, a D does still count for units as I said. However, as also mentioned, it will not qualify for IGETC since courses must be completed with a C or higher. I highly recommend course repetition. It is the easiest way to repair the grade.
