I really need help

I am going to school for an NROTC scholarship, I am deciding between U of Pitt eng. or Miami of Ohio eng. I think I like the campus and surrounding areas of Miami better, but like the academics Pitt provides (civil engineering) and their Unit. Anybody have info on either one?

From what I've heard, Miami of Ohio's strength is in humanities and social science.

I looked up ABET's website (accreditation of engineering programs) for Miami of Ohio and Pitt.

Pitt's civil engineering program has been accredited since 1936. Miami of Ohio does not have an ABET accreditation for their civil engineering program...their mechanical engineering program was just accredited in 2005.

If you want to do engineering, I would choose Pitt despite the poorer environment.

Normally I'd say don't worry about ABET accreditation, but since you're looking into civil engineering and from your previous posts, it kind of seems like you're not interested in spending another few years in grad school once you're done with the Navy (if you are interested in grad school, you could just go to a grad school with an accredited program and it'd fulfill licensure requirements), I'd say that you'd be setting some roadblocks for yourself later on in terms of getting your PE license if you didn't go for the ABET-accredited degree now...

What you could do is call up Miami of Ohio's civ department and ask them what their plans are for future accreditation, and whether your degree would be accredited. If their mech program was recently accredited, it's possible that they've recently been reviewed for accreditation and are just waiting on the final confirmations from ABET, but even if they say that accreditation is just around the corner, might want to take that with a grain of salt... Still, it'd be something to ask them about if you're really in love with the school.

ABET says U Miami's next general review is in 2010-11.

Heh... Guess I could've looked that up! =) Thanks, UCB.

Yeah, since licensure will actually be a priority for you, probably best to go with an ABET-accredited program...
