I'm a 2nd year econ major, and for three semesters in a row I have not been able to enroll in Math 54, not even a spot on the waitlist. I REALLY dont want to put off math for another semester. Is there anything I can do to get in the class this semester ( Fall)? Any admin I can contact? Any forms I can fill out? ( I heard of someone petitioning to enroll in the class at the end of a semester who hadnt been officially registered but proceeded to attend the class anyways)

The CalSO Postscript newsletter that was sent out recently says, "If you're on the waiting list, and you really want the course, don't be shy about making yourself know to the instructor (and getting more information on how students will be enrolled from the waitlist.)"

So try e-mailing the prof with an explanation of why you didn't get the class for three semesters (why was that, anyway?).

Wow, so you tried to get this class at the first opportunity for all three semesters and still didn't get it? That's harsh. I'd try the e-mail to the prof.

It's a little hard to believe that you've been denied from the same class three times. I'm going to be a senior and I've never not gotten into a class I wanted, though some of been close calls.

Are you sure you're doing everything you can? Even if you don't phase 1 it, are you signing up for it immediately when your phase 2 comes? If you can't add because the waitlist is full, you should be constantly checking to see if spots open up. And always attend the first few lectures for announcements about enrollment and wait it out. There's bound to be people that drop in the first couple weeks.

I dunno about any sneaky ways of getting in to classes. But definitely contact the professor and in the case of Math54, the head GSI because that's who handles enrollment.

I remember when I took Math 54, I was already enrolled. But then the day before the first lecture, I foolishly dropped and tried to switch into the other lecture section that was full because my friend was in that one. I talked to the head GSI and she said I had little chance of getting in, but I waited it out. Turns out a good amount of people dropped, and by the end of 2nd week I got into the class... even with the discussion section that I wanted too.
