I really need someone to read this. Please help. Went from out of state CC to CCC to apply to UCB.

So here is my odd situation.. I went to HS in Washington. After HS, my parents flew back to the motherland, outside of the country, and forced me to move to Illinois to live with my sister. At the time, I didn't have any aspirations or academic goals set for myself so they did not allow me to have any of my own options because they already deemed me as a failure. My sister and I do not get along very well so it was very hard transitioning to never-before-seen run-down, suburban hick town. I knew I had to do something during my time there, so I went to a community college. But I was confused, and was coming straight out of high-school, with the same bratty mindset I had for ages growing up so my grades were not impressive. But I didn't really care. I just saw this college as a way to test the waters and I never really thought how it could really impact my future. I went for one semester and I dropped because I wasn't passionate and I was broke. My parents didn't want to support me anymore, so I worked - a lot. I knew I couldn't get far there. So I moved to San Francisco, a place where diversity is more welcomed. Since then, my grades at the San Francisco community college have jumped tremendously.

SO HERE'S MY QUESTION: I want to transfer to UC Berkeley or Santa Clara University. I am a Business Major and I want to know if my Not So Great grades from my previous CC will be considered a bump in my application. I don't know what to do about it.. The classes I took in the previous CC are not relevant to my major, but I'm afraid not mentioning anything will be an act of dishonesty.
Please help. Thank you so much for reading.

What exactly is your question? Are you just asking chances?

A couple of misc. things:

 1. Include all your coursework. Leaving it off could get you in big trouble.

B’s aren’t the best thing in the world, but they’re not the end of it. It’s an upward trend as well, which can help. Sure, higher is better when it comes to GPA, but ~3.7 isn’t bad at all. It looks like Haas’s average for transfers last year was 3.84 so you’re still in the right range to have a chance.

Get your ducks in a row for instate tuition. Living here for two years doesn’t guarantee you’re considered a resident for tuition purposes, and OOS is expensive. Read the details here: http://registrar.berkeley.edu/establish.html

Are you in an underrepresented minority (which would help)? I understand Middle Eastern of any sort does not count toward that. With Santa Clara University, the main issue is that the Business Program is impacted. When you get into the school (or even apply), you must state which of the three “schools” you desire (Business, Engineering, or Liberal Arts). I think your working is an advantage on your application.

I’m asking for chances and also if I should take the time to mention in my application why my grades weren’t so great the first semester in the case that I am required to give all of my transcripts. But I’m also not sure if the application is going to ask for ALL transcripts (both CC’s) even before admission, especially if the classes that are relevant to my major are only in my 2nd CC. I heard that the UC application won’t ask for official transcripts from ALL CC’s/UNI’s until actually admitted. If I wanted to play it safe, would it be odd to mention this transition from Washington to illinois to SF without providing the transcript from the first CC in my app? Hope that made sense.
Thanks for your input

@lynjobes I’m Korean. Are my chances slim for SCU?

They’ll see your grades when you apply, but they’re self reported during application time. That means you fill in what schools you went to, classes, grades, etc. After you get in they tell you to send official transcripts, and you’re in trouble if it doesn’t match what you told them on the application.

I wouldn’t bother putting an explanation for the grades. First of all, the reason doesn’t carry a whole lot of weight (I don’t like my sister and I didn’t care about school), if it was a more tangible problem (like a family death mid-semester) then it might make sense… but in this case, I wouldn’t mention it. Second, the classes you got B’s in aren’t really related to your major, so a not-great grade in them isn’t quite as big a deal as it would be otherwise. I wouldn’t suggest explaining a “bad” grade unless it’s actually bad.
