i really need someone's help :'(

i was okay about this all before (as in accepted my failures) but my mom just verbally thrashed me. she wants me to go to some top tier school and i know i won't be accepted. i was wondering if anyone knew any schools that i might have a chance at

sorry in advance if this is the wrong thread. i'm new to cc.

weighted: 4.3 (my school is generous, so to speak, or weight differently)
unweighted: 3.18 (the problem, obviously)

SAT scores: (best score from each time)
writing: 730
cr: 710
math: 710

Subject tests: (another problem..i did really badly on lit ie a 590 so i don't plan on sending that anywhere. my mom thinks i'm an absolute idiot for not having 2 worth sending in)
math IIC: 750 (luck i guess)
math IC: 720 (weird to do worse on the easier exam)

3 APs senior year, 2APs junior year:
- US History: 4
- LangComp: 4

i suppose i should also add some misc. information like:
- i've been in yearbook for 4 years (Business Editor for 1 yr)
- community service club for 4 years (treasurer for 1)
- member for NHS
- nmsqt commended
- worked for 2 months (pathetic) at kumon
- newspaper for 4 years
- volunteered at an old age home & doctor's office.

i'm looking for the best school i have a reasonable chance at getting into. i got into rutgers so i was hoping someone would have recommendations above that level (if i could get in above that level) ?

anyone? lost cause?

Congratulations on getting into Rutgers, that’s no slouchy school! It’s ranked 66 on the US News national rankings.

What kind of school are you looking for? Small, big, etc.
What do you think you might want to study?
How far from home are you willing to go?
What can you afford?

Big questions.

First, I’m sorry that your mom behaved inappropriately and unmotherly to you. It’s important for you to know that her behavior has nothing to do with you - you’ve done nothing wrong. You’re a very good student! :)

Secondly, feel free to apply to any and all top schools…if you get in, then fine. If you don’t get in…well, tell your mom that top schools reject kids with perfect stats every year.

Thirdly, Is money an issue or can your family pay for all of your expenses?

Fourthly, what kind of school do you like…big, small, quiet, rah rah sports, greeks, warm weather, cold/snowy weather, etc…

Lastly, what is your major and intended profession?

With this info…we’ll make suggestions.

:)

If you answer mom2collegekids question, we can help you more.

You need to go the school that YOU want to go to and the one that fits YOUR career plans! A friend of my D (also female) wants a career in the military and wants to go to VMI. She is an excellent student and her parents wanted “better” for her. She eventually told her parents that it was the rest of HER life and she needed to succeed or fail based on HER decisions. She said she appreciated the input but VMI is what she wants. The parents got over it. You need to do what’s best for you. That said, perhaps there is a good compromise school? Answer mom2collegekids questions and we’ll see what we can come up with.

I don’t want to cause any domestic conflict! “Mom, Dad a guy on CC said I should tell you…”

thanks for all the support guys !

i’ve talked to my parents and they can support things financially. i would like to major in economics w/ mathematics or just economics. i’m not sure of the specific career yet though. i would like for it to not be a small school but my only major preference is that it be on the east coast. i’m pretty open to different schools, but i don’t see myself as a staunch liberal arts type.

hopefully this helps :)

why do you “know” you’re not gonna get into a top tier school? lack of self confidence can hurt you, too.

How does your mother define “top tier”? She sounds like a shallow person for whom top tier would consist of the few popular name-branders, in which case you would be right about your chances.

Check out Robins School of Business at University of Richmond: [Robins School of Business - University of Richmond](<a href=“Robins School of Business - University of Richmond”>http://business.richmond.edu/)

I think that you have a decent shot at any of these. Rochester looks especially doable with a very highly rated economics department. You’ve got 2 days, but their Common App supplement is short.

Brandeis (Jan 15)
NYU (Jan 1 - 2 Subject tests)
Boston College (Jan 1 - 2 Subject Tests)
Rochester (Jan 1)
Case Western (Jan 15)
Penn State (Rolling)
University of Miami (Jan 15)
Boston University (Jan 1 - send 2 subject tests)
University of Pittsburgh (Rolling, Jan 15 for honors)
Syracuse (Jan 1)
Fordham (Jan 15 - subject tests recommended)
Clemson (May 1)

I’d try U of Wisconsin-Madison and Rochester.

Suggestions: Come up with a different screen name while you still only have a few posts. Your scores would fall in the middle 50% or higher at nearly any school in the country. So, calling yourself a “loser” is an insult to every hard-working kid who would envy your qualifications. Grow a backbone in dealing with your mom (politely but firmly), or at least learn to ignore her insults. You have a fine record.

I like CRD’s list. At the reach end, also consider Tufts if it’s not too late.

I agree with the above suggested schools, plus…

an ivy or two that YOU like (not ones that your parents like)
UVa

and, yes, change your screenname…you’re awesome! :)

I have the same problem with my parents. tell your mom to go take a chillpill.

It’s unanimous - change your screen name! Maybe NotALoser Millions would love to have your resum

You should be proud of your accomplishments. You might enjoy a smaller school than Rutgers (which is a fine large school), which would give you money and attention. Consider Marist, Goucher, Alfred, Susquehanna, Franklin & Marhsall, Ursinus, Muhlenberg, Dickinson, Lehigh, Lafayette.

But don’t dawdle.

try Clemson, we’re at the same ranking as Rutgers right now but our goal is to get into the top 20 public colleges by 2011 so we’re gonna be going up in the rankings real soon. Our reputation is increasing and we have a great mathematics and economics program.
