I would appreciate opinions on my matches and reaches, and will I have a below average/average/above average shot at my reaches?

matches: university of wisconsin madison, boston university

reaches:northwestern, cornell, wellesley, rice, college of william and mary, duke, emory (i would really appreciate it if you guys could say below average/average/above average shot so i could narrow down my list.)

My stats

act=29 (1st time, but will retake hoping for 30 or above)
satII us history(700) chemistry (730)
10 ap (Most rigorous possible) and all honor classes except 2 (scored mostly 4 and a few 5)by end of senior year (mostly A and A-) AP scholar with distinction
GPA=4.15/4.0
no class rank, but would be top 2% out of 700 students.

cello player since 4th grade, amnesty international (10,11,12), math team(11, 12, captain for 12th grade) nhs (11,12) volunteer at hospital(11,12) tutor children(10,11,12), led a mandatory class of about 20 students, taking care of family chores while parent has been gone at a mental facility (this takes up my time...is this considered an ec?). first generation college person, biracial (asian caucasion), disadvantaged (low income, divorced parents, parent at mental facility, all happened during high school but managed to keep up my grades) Planning on an excellent essay about my acquired passion for learning/reading. I say acquired because I never grew up in an educational atmophere. I had a dramatic improvement in high school (act went from 18-29)

With a 30+ ACT score, you should be in at Wisconsin and BU. It would be helpful to know what region you are from and how competitive your high school is so that I could more accurately predict your chances at the others but if I had to guess...

Northwestern: Good chance if you apply early (it might be a good school for you because it has excellent music programs and you mentioned the cello)
Cornell: Slight reach
Wellesley: Match
Rice: Reach
College of William and Mary: Slight Reach
Duke: HUGE reach unless you are from North Carolina
Emory: Slight reach but very good chance if you apply ED or ED II

Hope this helps...

thanks, my school is very compititve sends at least 20 students to top colleges. I live in Iowa. the problem with applying early for me is that I can't travel there, so I wouldn't want to apply early until i've visited. I am staying home most of my days because of my family situation.

WHOA!!! You need to take the SAT, PLEASE! Don't get stuck in the midwest trap (I also grew up in the midwest). I know a guy who got a 29 on the ACT and wan't going to take the SAT but got convinced by my college counselor. He got a 1550 (and ended up at Harvard). I personally know I would hav bombed the ACT, so I took the SAT and ended up getting into a few Ivies.

I suggest studying really hard and taking the october test. If you can get a 2200+ I would say all these schools become very reasonable targets. As is with a 29 ACT I recommend ED to Northwestern (40% chance) or Emory (70% chance), both these schools give crazy boosts to ED applicants.

i'm defiantly not going to apply ed to colleges because i just couldn't do any visiting because of my circumstances. considering this, how would these reaches be? and do colleges look factor income into the admission process?

What about the SAT? You are really shooting yourself in the foot...assuming a 29 ACT:

university of wisconsin madison: Accepted
boston university: Accepted

northwestern: Rejected
cornell: Rejected
wellesley: Waitlisted
rice: Rejected
college of william and mary: WL or Accepted
duke: Rejected
emory: Waitlisted or Accepted

You could get into Northwestern. I had similiar stats and was admitted. Although you're against it, ED might be best for % chances.

You should apply to UW-Madison very early and stress your first generation/diversity in the applicantion. You'll get in (I don't think you'd be deferred, your grades will be strong enough, although I know people with 30s who were deferred and later admitted, as half of defferals are, but anyway...) and maybe one of their nice diversity scholarships.

What is your intended major?

do you recommend applying ed if i haven't visited the campus??

I would do it ED. Its a HUGE boost there, I read a stat that NU has the biggest boost to ED students in the country, followed closely by Emory.
