So, i need some help. Im a HS Senior, and in the past i was dead set on a BFA in MT. But now i realize I want to be in a program where you can work on these musical theatre skills but also a more well rounded program where you can work on shakespeare and other contemporary play works. I would really love some advice on programs. Im dont have a dying need to go to a highly competitive school. I would love to hear your thoughts.

The best advice I could think of would be to look at the acting curriculum provided on the websites FOR the Musical Theatre Program. Some schools require more acting classes than others and you definitely want to look for one that delves deeper than others. If you are looking for a MT program still, try and find out if MT majors are allowed to audition for straight plays and see if they often do classics such as Shakespeare outside of studio work as well. Schools that don’t offer a degree in Acting as well as musical theatre might be ones you want to stray away from. Schools that might be known for having a strong acting program in addition to a strong MT program would be ones to look at.

Hopefully this gives you a good starting point! If you are truly interested in a more well-rounded degree, a BA is always an option. But if you specifically want to major in Musical Theatre, these are a few simple points that might point you in the right direction.

Don’t rule out the BA programs! If you want a more well-rounded education then the BA degree sounds perfect for you. As Alexa said, look specifically at the degree requirements and classes offered for each major.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the input, seeing as I’m driving myself crazy! Lol

Also research the courses available as electives outside of the requirements. Many BA and BFA MT programs offer strong acting training including classical work. Since you are a senior it is getting late to add new schools to your list, but you have until January 1 or 15 at most schools, so take the time now to do some research on the schools you have already applied to, and to add a couple of schools where you are within the application and audition scheduling deadlines.

Schools I know off the top of my head where MT students will have access to strong acting training include: Syracuse, NYU, Penn State, Shenandoah, James Madison, CMU, UARTS, Temple, UMiami… there are many others those are just the first ones to pop into my head. VCU is a BFA acting program that has musical theatre opportunities for students.

Good Luck!

Thank you!!
