I truly want to become a medical doctor through the BS/MD, however I dont feel that my grades are competent for this program.
All As in all advanced freshmen courses, but
Bs both semester advanced algebra
B first semester advanced English 2
B advanded Precal and AP physics this semester (junior)
currently at 4.5 gpa/3.9 uw (before calculating junior grades), 1490SAT - no health volunteering, but will start next semester, volunteer at church, debater, non-caucasian/non-asian
I will study hard to get all As henceforth throughout high school. Im just so scared I wont get in.
I really want UH/UTMB program, Baylor’s B2B medical track program, Brown, or Northwestern.
Everything else from rest of classes are A’s. Even if I study my butt off and get all As next semester, and assuming I get very high scores on chem/math2/bio SAT subject tests, do I pale in comparison to the rest of the competition?
Rice and Baylor also work together and have their own BS/MD program. These are all super competetive, I know. Again, this is my dream goal, whatever it takes.
Focus on getting good grades in a rigorous curriculum. You might consider retaking the SAT because it is on the low side for these uber competitive programs.
It’s good to have dreams and goals, but IMO it is difficult to know you want to become a physician in the absence of ever having worked with patients. Most students who end up becoming physicians did not do so via a BS/MD program.
When researching BS/MD programs make sure to understand the requirements (GPA to remain in program, ease of getting patient facing experience, MCAT required or not, etc.). For example, there is quite a bit of variance in required GPA, and some are really high (e.g., WUSTL).
Lastly, make sure to have plans B and C, as most undergrads who go in as pre-meds do not end up going to med school.
Follow these threads to get an idea on BS/MD. In future rather than creating a new thread, post in the discussion thread.
Look the 2 threads created for BS/MD each year, one for discussion and second for the results thread. Especially the results thread will give an idea of the students who got admitted.
You need to understand more about what it takes for an admit. And pursue that. No assumptions.
Just listing grades, gpa and admitting no healthcare experience hints you don’t have a full idea what makes a great applicant.
And it wont be just vol in a hosp setting, it matters how you integrate. Nor some things CC kids come up with like vol in a senior home. Not shadowing. The effort matters.
The higher the college tier, Brown and NU, the tougher the vetting. Yes, B grades in stem- and a slightly low SAT- are a risk, as you not only want a stem major at these top colleges, but a coveted program with lower admit rates.
See if you can catch up on the understanding.
Adding. It’s not the SAT total. It’s the components.
