Alright, I did well on the stuff I recognized, but I’ll go through a review book (any suggestions, I have PR) and try for that 700+. The scale is rather generous on Math II, so maybe I’m just hard on myself.

I think u definitely have a shot at duke!

Yeah I’m in precalc now and took a diagnostic Math II, and we still haven’t gotten to all subjects yet. So I’ll probably have to teach myself some of it.

Hey thanks for chancing me!

I think you have a pretty good shot with that ACT score, although your GPA is a little low you definitely have at least a 50%+ chance :)

Thanks everyone. Will colleges like Duke take into consideration that a big factor for my subpar GPA is a not too good Freshman year (really just in Spanish)?

What was your Spanish grade?

Sorry I meant French, I know some spanish and I was just helping my friend with his homework. But I got a B- in French, it started out at Cs and then I got Bs later on for a final of a B-. I struggled a bit in the 100 minute commute to school and the fact that the school was pretty rigorous, but once I got used to the school I feel like I have done pretty well.

Why would you go to a school 100 minutes away?

Its a private school, the public high school I would go to is horrible in academics (I went to public school up to middle school, its really bad and the high school is supposed to be 10x worse). Probably over 1/2 the students in middle school were high in the morning, so I went to a pretty prestigious private school that has great teachers, competitive sports teams, and where a lot of students don’t smoke all day (a few kids do drugs, but a big minority).

Hahaha why didn’t you just move? That’s what my parents did

That would have been a much better idea haha, I have no clue why that wasn’t thought of

haha, so 3 hours and 20 minutes commuting each day?!

Yep, it sucks and leads to a lot of late nights and all, but if I could get into a top college I guess it would all be worth it.

Hopefully they’ll take that into account

ya I hope so, I’ve noted that on a lot of the questionnaires that my GC gives me and he knows I live far away and all so hopefully he notes that and the ad-com realizes that that time could be spent in better ways that driving

Could anybody else please chance me for Duke?

Look at the 2014 admitted class profile for Duke, at:

[Duke University Admissions: Class of 2014 Profile](http://www.admissions.duke.edu/jump/applying/who_2013profile.html)

If you look through the Duke thread archives on CC, you’ll see lots of applicants with better ACT scores that you who did not get in, and many with lower ACT scores who did.

The morale is: Go for Duke with all you have. You do have a chance, but many of the factors to getting in are out of your control. Be sure to keep your backup and safety school applications in up to par.

Duke is becoming as hard to get in to as some Ivies, so you have as good a chance as any. Try and keep the grades high and you might be okay Good luck.

Hey man just chill. I think that with decent grades you should be fine, but remember it is still a coin flip anywhere. Admissions is so spotty so make sure you apply to a good deal of schools. I didn’t have SAT/ACT scores near you (2060 super) and I got into Duke. However, I was rejected (not even wait listed) by every other ivy I applied to, even the ones that were ranked lower than Duke. I still hold that with all things equal there is a good deal of luck involved.
