Long story short, I didn’t take the application process as seriously as I should. I received both merit and athletic scholarships from two small liberal arts colleges, with d2 athletics. They were terrible schools, so I choose my cheapest option, with seemingly better academics, Rowan University. I hate it here. Everyone seems so apathetic towards life and doesn’t seem enthusiastic about learning. My friend is transferring and He inspired me to do it. The whole time I’m thinking its just me, but we both say the same thing; it stinks here.
I’m looking for a school with relatively cheaper costs in the northeast. I’m a history major, with interest in a psychology minor (im looking into grad school for psychology) My current college gpa is 3.7. My high school gpa and sat aren’t very good, so I’m hoping they don’t need to see that haha. I’d also like d1 or d2 track as they give more money. If not, d3 is fine. Running tracks help with my well-being and mental clarity, and it also helps with my work ethic.
I’ve looked extensively at New Jersey instate but they either miss my standards or are too expensive so cheaper out of state with a good history department and track team is what I’m looking at. Can anyone offer any advice or past experience with this??? Thank you
Small liberal arts colleges may be willing to give you good scholarships for running. I would look at Gettysburg College, Muhlenberg College, and Ursinus College.
Just curious, what specifically do you not like about Rowan? Is it not challenging? What is your take on the campus?
It is a very viable option right now and I don’t wanna make a mistake.
Did you look into Montclair State? Not sure what your standards are for the transfer school, but Montclair is affordable with good programs academically and athletically. It may be d3, but would probably cost the same as a private school in the Northeast with merit scholarship and/or a track athletic scholarship.
My advice: toughen up and stick it out. You’re there to get an education. If you find others apathetic that’s their problem. You’re grades are excellent. You’re not going to find a much cheaper option and you run the risk of setting yourself behind and not graduating in four years. Your post indicates some immaturity. If you’re getting a 3.7 amongst a bunch of apathetic classmates/competition then it sounds to me you are doing just fine. Get over it and stay. I’ll try to find the link to post but I recently read a survey regarding college graduation rates and transfer rates. Among the the findings were that students who transferred did so very often because of changed financial circumstances but also because they also didn’t realistically consider the whole concept of “fit”, relative to cost, distance from home etc (very high rate of transfers among students who initially go out of state to college more than 3-4 hours drive from home for instance). Bottom line—- recognize that at Rowan you’re doing very well relative to your classmates—-
Rowan is a great instate public option, especially for engineering. The campus is walkable, no need to take a bus (like Rutgers and it’s cheaper) nice new freshman dorms. Don’t be turned off by one post that’s negative. Go visit Rowan and see for yourself. I recommend TCNJ, Rowan, Ramapo, and Stockton as the best instate public options even over Rutgers (rutgers large campus, large class sizes, grad students teaching classes, lack of sufficient gen ed classes each semester and declining safety on main campus, only make life more difficult for the student.
Before you jump, you might perhaps look into changing your major to Psychology at Rowan. You state that you want to go to graduate school in that field and yet your major is History. It might be that you find more challenge and a better group of peers in a different major.
