I Really Want to Love MIT, But...

My daughter is a freshman at MIT this year. She loved the campus from the moment we arrived for the info session. It was her place, clearly. She never wavered. And now she is working hard, singing, playing varsity sports, and loving life. It’s not easy. It’s not for everyone. It wouldn’t have been for me, for example. Just recently, I asked her why they don’t spiff up the landscaping a bit. “It’s not their priority, mom.” What IS available is amazing. But if MIT doesn’t make your heart sing, look elsewhere. Find somewhere that makes YOUR heart sing.

So interesting. I thought MIT was beautiful. I loved it being along the Charles River, and I love the dome. And my son’s dorm, Simmons, is architectural so awesome.

MIT’s mixed four year housing system is unique and helps freshman get oriented. Every dorm
saves space for freshman and those that do not pledge a Greek House, will tend to stay with their dorm all four years.
The dorm becomes your family away from home.

The architecture is really amazing, after all I.M. Pei went to MIT and designed some MIT buildings, along with many world famous architects. The sculpture and art museums at MIT are A+ too. Its an amazing environment for the right student, who wants a challenge, wants to be in a science or engineering field, and wants a well rounded education, that the MIT freshman science and math core provides.
MIT is a bit more well rounded education compared to most top ten engineering programs out there, because of the 8 humanities and social science classes required and the freshman science core.

I don’t see a problem. If you don’t like MIT, then don’t apply to MIT. The kind of impression I’m getting from you is that you are forcing yourself to like and fit into MIT, probably because of its reputation or someone told you to do so. No reason to apply to a school that you don’t like, especially if it’s a school like MIT.

^^^ +1

And you might not make a great impression on MIT admissions if you don’t really like the school…
