I Really Want to Switch Schools.....

Hello everyone!

I currently go to a terrible public high school. There is nothing here for me that I enjoy and I can't see myself being here for the next two years. To make matters worse my school only offers five AP classes (World, Lit, Lang, US, Calc). Pretty sad, I know.

But there is another high school about 15 minutes from mine that is superb in Academics (ranked 7th in the state in a recent poll). I would really like to go into Biomedical Engineering and this school has a multitude of classes to help me get there:

AP Calculus AB & BC
AP Physics B
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
AP US History
AP World History
AP European History
AP Statistics
AP Art History
AP US Gov't
AP English Lit. & Lang.
AP Computer Science A
APES
AP Latin
AP German
AP Mandarin
AP Human Geography
AP Psychology
AP Art History

And too many Dual Enrollment classes to list...

So, should I follow my love of science and math and transfer my senior year to this school? One thing to note is I am first at my school currently without any competition. This high school probably has tons of Valedictorian hopefuls, challenge accepted! :)

Thank you!

duh. colleges look at how competitive your school is. I know a girl who was zoned for one school, but went to another for some reason, and when applying to Duke they asked her why she didnt go to the first school which offered IB. Do the hardest most rigorous things out there for you, get A’s and high scores and any school is a possibility

Colleges don’t necessarily judge you based on how many AP courses you have completed throughout high school. They like to see that you’ve taken the most rigorous classes available to you at your school. It’s not your fault that your school only offers 5 AP classes, right?
If you feel that you MUST switch schools, do it! You’ll get the benefit of some more challenging courses senior year (and will most likely avoid senioritis, lol).

Yes, switch schools and take 19 AP classes. Yes.

It seems like this school would be very beneficial to your engineering goals. If you do happen to switch, here’s what I suggest you should take:

AP Calculus BC
AP Physics B- try self-studying Physics C- Mechanics, if possible.
AP Chemistry
AP English Literature
Honors Anatomy and Physiology- if this school offers it.
Foreign Language, unless you are past level 3.
Dual Enrollment Class- maybe Engineering related?

This is indeed a difficult schedule, but nothing compared to the Pre-Engineering track in college.

Good luck!

I would also recommend taking Calc II or Statics through DE.

Oh okay, so go for it? Would it look bad if I switch schools my senior year?

Yes, you’ll look like an idiot, yes.

No. Make the most of your current high school.

And if you need to take more APs, self study.

you seem to be really determined to strive for something more than what you currently have and why not?! as long as you don’t face any setbacks financially (and even so, you could seek help easily) theres a huge opportunity only 15 mins away. people have switched schools in their senior year because their family had to move or wtv. they’ve managed and done absolutely well. go for it. i would  or even try moving schools halfway through the academic year. (i don’t know if they would let you do that but my school certainly can between semesters)

Sure, just become the Valedictorian at this other school. That way there’s no possibility for colleges looking down upon your situation.

I go to a school similar to the one you are currently attending. At first, I thought I was reading my own question. Then, I realized I would never be lucky enough to have another decent school in close proximity to mine & I never posted this question to begin with.

Anyway… If I had that opportunity, I would jump on it immediately.

One question… You said you couldn’t see yourself being at that school for the next two years, but then you said you would switch your senior year to the other school… So do you have two more years left or one?

But yeah… Being Valedictorian would be great, of course, but if your school (like mine) has a crap curriculum and isn’t very competitive, it won’t be much more impressive than a rank of, say, 9 in a more competetive school. If you manage to get in the top 10% at your new school, you’ll still look impressive.

In the end, I don’t think we can make this decision for you. I would hop on the opportunity, but I’m not you. CSIHSIS thinks it is idiotic, but he’s not you. Do what feels right to * you. *

Why didn’t you switch schools earlier?
