I really want to transfer to Barnard, but

<p>unfortunately, my GPA from my state school (3.25) is less than stellar, and of course, grades are a huge factor in admission to Barnard. I did make Dean’s List last semester, but I suppose this gives you a rough idea of how badly I did first semester. With that, I ask any Barnard student or anyone who has insight into Barnard admission for answers to these questions: What are my chances at getting into Barnard? Do I have any chance at all? Should I postpone applying and wait another semester to improve my GPA? (I should note that I hope to avoid this because I am really unhappy at my current school and am excited about the opportunity to study at Barnard.)</p>

Cumulative College GPA: 3.25
Extracurricular activities: concertmaster of the symphony orchestra
Interests: violin (12 years), piano (13 years)</p>

<p>High School GPA: 3.6
SAT: 2140 (CR: 710, M: 690, W: 740)
SAT II: U.S. History: 720, Biology: 700
Extracurricular activities: Student Body President (senior year), Class Vice President (freshmen-junior year), honors level string orchestra (3 years, concertmaster in my senior year), chairperson of our school’s peer leadership program, model congress, National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, various youth orchestras outside of school</p>

<p>I really don’t know all that much about transfer stats, except what I have read over the years of reading this board.</p>

<p>I strongly suspect, though, that Barnard will want to see more involvement and achievement in your current school. I think you are correct…you should wait at least another semester and in the mean time, make a huge effort to get involved and active in meaningful ways at your current school. That way, the ad com at Barnard can get a real idea of what you would offer to the Barnard community as well as what they can offer you.
