what's more annoying than the chances threads are the threads that pop up every month or so telling people how annoying those threads are. Seriously, do you really think you getting peeved is going to make people stop? Everyone is a little curious and insecure - it's only natural to ask for input.

What's more, if you really wanted to have an intellectual discussion, you didn't HAVE to post up an article you wrote. Any other would have been fine.

...sheesh, i can almost smell the hypocrisy through my modem

Additionally, newspaper articles are not usually the best sources for intellectual discussion.

Additionally, this is a forum about COLLEGE ADMISSIONS. Why would you come here, of all places, to "start an intellectual discussion"? If you're really so secure and confident, why are you spending any amount of time on CC at all? You don't have to be an astrophysicist to figure THAT out.

I do not think the internet is the best place for intellectual discussion. On Friday, we had a lecture on the permanence of time, which non-Georgetown students were allowed to attend. We had two hours of intellectual discussion in addition to wine and cheese. I drank Perrier.

In other words, a trip to a university's lecture series does help.

So you are justifying doing something so ridiculous? Why don't people nip the problem in the bud and grow some confidence? It seems to me that you are encouraging such low self-regard.

No, not any other article would have been fine because I would not have been able to back up the article of another person as I would be able to back up my own article.

I never made the claim the coming to CC showed a lack of confidence. I said posting chances threads showed a lack of confidence.

Let us refrain from making statements that might inflate nspedling's ego even further. For I am terribly worried that his head may either burst, or cause him to float up into the universe, upon which he will not be able to apply to Rice and Brown and such. Oh deary.

Okay, but still, why an intellectual discussion here? I mean, I think CC is useful, but I think of it (or the Transfer section, anyhow) as a) a place to ask people to evaluate stats and b) a place to ask quick questions (those not necessarily in order of priority).

Also, janel, what did nspeds ever do to you?

It's not justification, Matt, it's empathy. The people that post the chances threads are typically those that are new to CC. If you have a way of instilling confidence in total strangers across the internet before they even come here, be my guest. If you don't, just relax. Nobody else really thinks its that bad.

Ok so I'm applying to a couple of ivies and I was wondering if you guys could evaluate my stats.... :-) Just kidding. As far as asking people to evaluate your stats, obviously its not going to improve your chances of getting in--your stats are the same and you're going to get in or not get in regardless of what people on the board think. However, that being said, its a very stressful time and sometimes having someone tell you that they know someone else who got in with similar stats can give you hope. Sure, its not going to matter when the decisions actually come in but it does give people a way a bit of encouragemnt at a very stressful time. The only ones that kind of have no purpose are all the people who post with perfect SAT's, perfect GPA, and amazing EC's who ask if the have a shot at Harvard etc. I mean, why bother posting because obviously they have as good of a shot as anybody but there are never guarantees and no one on the board can predict the outcome. However, I'm going to ignore those posts or anything because they just want support and thats what this board is helpful for. It doesn't bother me but those of you who dont like it dont have to reply.

Matm1: didn't you just start a post a little while ago about an article you sent to colleges and you asked if it would improve your chances? that's practically the same as posting stats--how are we supposed to know what the adcoms will think? Does that not show a lack of confidence in your great accomplishment or were you just posting it to show off? I'm guessing that's not the case, I'm sure you just wanted honest opinions. Plus, didn't the encouragment people gave you and compliments make you feel a little better? I think thats all people want with the chances threads!

be quiet mamt..ur being a hypocrite..u think its fine to do it for yourself (bc it was 'so last year')

but now ur acting like ur too good for those kind of student insecurities that we all go through. yes its annoying to read, but asking for chances isn't a waste of time. it can be useful when knowledgable people reply.

If you hate chances threads so much, just skip the threads that are named "Rate my chances". It's not so hard, is it?

Very well said. I have been trying to tell people that there are plenty of threads here. Be selective and don't just berate everything around you. Some people might be insecure - so what... Don't judge people without even knowing the impications of their past.
