I run my own website.. how good does that look to colleges?

I have a website that I have plans to develop and have public and successful by June 2013. I want to put this on my application, since this will be one of my serious things in my life. My question is how do I show this on an application and also, how good does it really look? Thanks in advance. :)

Do you have a link?

I’ve seen way too many people say they have a website and in the end it’s just a text document with their names on it

Lol! Really? I’ve never heard of someone doing that. I don’t have a link now because I’m not done with it; but to build some type of credibility for myself, I had my own website in 5th grade with my friends, we had a good amount of 10-15 members who joined (which was pretty darn cool at the time) and I had it running for a good year or so. The premise of that website was to reach out to other kids our age and send a weekly newsletter of all the cool things (or the things we thought were awesome) and try to turn into a newspaper. After a while, my friends stopped caring so my mom and I took down the site. But it was pretty awesome to be a 5th grader with her own website. My new website will be something similar but it will mostly be linked to my youtube channel, and I’ll try to build a bigger fanbase.

I’m not sure that is so unusual. My kids all had to set up websites in 5th-7th grades in public schools in two different states. The oldest’s class members each did it back in 1998; she is almost 26.

Or do you mean a retail or some other such site?

I doubt it will be that important unless you create the next big social media network.

The fact that you can create a website won’t be seen as any big deal…all kinds of kids do that all the time.

What will–or won’t-- impress them is the website itself. What does it do or achieve? What is the big deal about linking it to your YouTube channel–and how great is your channel?

Nowadays, with current technology, anyone can create a website ;)

But, it is still a very good EC and reflects something you *enjoy *doing, so you should definitely list it among your ECs and include a link to it.

Another part of your problem is that so far you don’t seem to run a web site. So far, it seems you “have plans” to run a web site.

Having plans to run a web site won’t amount to a hill of beans. I am reminded of a quote from the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope, “Brains that are unbought will never serve the public much.” If you get your web site up and running, it will be an accomplishment, but as others have said, it probably won’t be an extraordinary one. I mean, Tavi Gevinson’s web site was an extraordinary accomplishment, but it was extraordinary because almost nobody has that kind of success.

Making the website itself isn’t all that impressive, and many applicants could have one of their own. Even if you create it yourself entirely, it’s not so uncommon either (I did that when I was 12 for a Pok
