I Skipped President Taft and I Liked It

First, special thanks to Jennieblue22 for suggesting an online store where we could buy the 2001 edition of Amsco for just $4.00 plus shipping.

Mal77 - You make interesting points about the APUSH free response essays. Luck is important but so is skill. I'll have more to say about that in a future thread. For now, as you will see in a moment you did inspire me to step up my free response practice program.

Today's class focused on TR as a Progressive president. Guided by the Crash Course book I focused on the Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902, the Northern Securities Case, the Hepburn Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Totally skipped Taft and I liked it. Tomorrow we will focus on Women and African Americans during the Progressive Era.

Decided to upgrade my free response practice program. Gave students the following question from the 2007 Exam: To what extent did the role of the federal government change under President Theodore Roosevelt in regard to TWO of the following:
Labor
Trusts
Conservation
Essays are due on Thursday. I'll post (with the student's permission) the best one.

As always I appreciate your suggestions. So far so good - Yes we can!

FRQ should be done in class, if at all possible. Give them the (recommended) 40 minutes so it feels like an actual FRQ for the test.

I agree with Locke19 - if time allows, it is a good idea to do a timed FRQ/DBQ in class.

Also, if you decide to do the timed writes, as the test gets closer, give them multiple essays (each with 40 min.) So 1 = 40 min, 2 = 80 min, etc. My biggest problem with the test was that I had only ever practiced writing one essay at a time, so when it came time to write three in one sitting, I only did so-so on the second and third.

^^ agree with Locke19. the closest thing our class has done to that is an mc/essay hybrid test that took 60 min total (we could divide it up however we wanted, although 30/30 was suggested by our teacher) and I’m afraid it will hurt us when test time comes.
