I still havent gotten in yet...

So is it possible that, as a late applicant, I could be deffered until May or later? May 3 is the deadline for my deposit at MSU (the only other school I applied to)

kmaqmom: My d had such a bad taste in her mouth from the whole EA deal where an entire STATE was deferred en-mass on December 21st that she withdrew her app in January before she even had an acceptance in her hand....BTW, all of those deferred had much higher stats than those accepted from a neighboring OOS state.....Her peers who were deferred haven't heard back yet and most have committed to other schools.......

zdub08: it it actually UM who is whining " we have so many applications this year! what are we going to do????" Going through applications is your job and giving a decision....whatever it is...in a timely manner is the proper thing to do.
A forum is a place to vent. That is what we are doing.

"BTW, all of those deferred had much higher stats than those accepted from a neighboring OOS state....."

umm... probably not.

But, I do feel your frustration with it all. I think Michigan should just switch to a binding ED policy, I don't see how this kind of lackluster Early Response policy really does anything to Michigan's yield. They'll be able to meet their enrollment targets better and more efficiently with a binding policy, and make 40% of the class ED admits. So, instead of trying to project a class of 5500, which is impossible, they can project and conduct yield management on 3000-3500, which is much more manageable.

There is definitely something weird about this year's admissions.

I applied in late November and got a decision in 3 weeks whereas my friend who applied at the same time and who had almost identical stats hasn't been notified yet!

keefer: I knew someone would doubt me, but, unfortunately, without going into too many details, I do have first-hand information to confirm this.....the neighboring state is NY and they have their own admissions person at UMIch; not only did they get their decisions (accept or defer) MUCH earlier than NJ, I happen to know at least 3 NY guidance counselors who confirmed what I posted.....(as well as NJ guidance counselors who are in complete agreement)

i have no doubt that you know someone or dozens of people who have gotten in from a different OOS state with lower stats, but there are thousands of applicants that are accepted. I don't think their decision release timetable is based on where you live.

Admissions offices at all Universities don't accept based on numbers alone. From a student's perspective, getting into the school is all they have to worry about. But from the admissions officer's perspective, they have brackets that they admit from, and they have historical data on the yield rate from each bracket, for example your 1600/4.0/valedictorian/intel talent search bracket probably has a significant lower yield rate, compared to your 1200/3.5/top 10% bracket. You may fall into a very large bracket (most likely middle brackets), and they are trying to see how many people send in the deposits before they admit anymore and avoid the overenrollment of past few years. It's difficult for UM to manage yield because the freshman admit size is larger than similarly ranked schools.

Damn I'm starting to really lose hope.

If Mich is going to reject me due to a lousy SAT score(1940) I'm going to be dissappointed.

I raised my GPA from a 3.8 to a near 4.0 second semester hoping it would make a difference, and right now it looks like a no. My SAT 2's were good(790,750) and my EC's/essays were decent.

Screw the SAT and screw OOS.

when are they going to release decisions??
has anyone been rejected yet?

this wait is ridiculous. i have not heard a single word from them since i turned in my application.

Is your application considered complete when the last piece of info gets sent in? Like counsellor rec or test scores? Under date submitted for mine it says Feb 6th =S Uh oh...

yeah, another thread said april 15th
thats so far away!

I have a question...

I sent in my official high School transcript to UM, however, on the application status page it says "High School Transcript." should it say official? Does anyone else's says "High school Transcript" instead of "Official High School Transcript"

Mine says "Transcript High School"

I'm going crazy just waiting!! UMich should be at least a wee bit courteous and send out an email or something!!!! :(

yeah...its kind of weird because a couple kids from my school with 4.0 UM gpas havent heard yet...and one applied nov, and the other early dec. ...they both had pretty decent acts on the high end of the range...

This EA over deferring debacle is gonna kick them in the butt somehow. There are tens of thousands who were deferred. If they're "not prioritized" how they gonna get through even a small percentage of them. At best that's BS...at this point, admissions have their reference numbers, and I THINK common sense says they have what...a week more to hack into that stack? Either they do it by arbitrary cutoffs...or some poor bloke at the bottom with a 3.9, won't get a re-look.

Not that it matters, between the 20-odd people waiting to hear at my school (NJ) and the threads on CC, the vast majority of those who applied EA weren't happy waiting for Michigan to get their "ducks in a row"...and have moved on. Many to more prestigious universities (including Ivies) that had their acts together, and a few to less prestigious schools that have since won them over (or thrown cash at them). I doubt very much they'll attempt the EA/Rolling thing next year.

I just got off the phone with admissions. They said their date to notify any student of any decision will not be later than April 15th. That means even the kid who has been waiting since early NOV for a decision may have to wait it out til the end.....unless UM feels like changing that date...to.... maybe....April 30. Crazy!!!! What ARE they doing over there!!!!!!

Deal with it. It's not like this is the first year they decided to behave that way.

true, but that doesn't excuse the behavior. People are dealing with it apparently..by enrolling in other colleges.
