I'm applying for Columbia early decision, and at around 9 I posted my drafts for the supplements directly onto the app and edited them there. I put the lists in alphabetical order, and I edited a few sentences of my essays. But because I was paranoid, I ended up finishing at 11. Just my luck, my internet completely went offline and I was forced to sign onto the common app and see that my hard work was ALL erased. I quickly posted my un-edited versions and submitted the app-- but it was a few minutes past 12. I feel so mad right now... for this past week I've been not getting any sleep, staying up till 5 am each night working on my app. I really hope they won't mind. Any thoughts? I feel terrible right now :(

Someone, ANYONE, please assist me

Since I have never been through this experience, I cannot offer advice on your current situation. However, I just wanted to say I hope everything works out fine for you. Good luck

Thank you! Ahh this is such a stressful situation.

Did this happen to anyone? I can’t move on, lol.

I don’t think it will matter…best of luck.

Thank you for those words. And one more thing, because I posted the unedited versions, I realized after I submitted my supplements that I misspelled a word, but the word is very cultural and it’s about a time period / empire and it was an adjective describing a mosque. Do you think they’ll search the word and see it doesn’t exist and then reject me? I’m so paranoid.

Why don’t you take some time and properly edit your unedited input, save it to a .pdf, and attach it to a short explanatory email to admissions? They will do what they will do, but an inquiry and explanation from you may go a long ways. Give them a clean copy of what you intended to submit- if they are sympathetic to your story, they shouldn’t mind receiving a few edits as well. Next time, maybe allow for Murphy’s Law and apply a day early?

Call the Admissions office on Monday and let them know what happened.

Anyone else who opens this thread…consider this your reminder to:
- Print out a copy of your Common App occasionally as you go.
2.For the "short answers, essays, and supplements, write them first in a MS Word Document or similar. It is then very easy to paste them in large chunks rather than re-type them all. - Email yourself these two documents so that they are saved “on the cloud” as well as on your hard drive.

Yes, I totally, completely learned my lesson. Submit your apps a day before, and write everything as a document, not directly on the app!

I don’t mind the unedited supplements, because everything I edited was minimal and negligible except for that spelling mistake. Oh, and I didn’t alphabetize the lists, but I don’t think that matters. Do you think I should contact them just for that spelling mistake? I don’t want them to notice something that would otherwise go unnoticed

I would not tell them about the mistake. Either let it go or email them a completely satisfactory copy and ask them to replace what was submitted with that. Don’t get into what the corrections were, apologize for it, or anything of that sort- just request that ‘A’ be replaced by ‘B’ as you noticed some typos.

Unless you are past the deadline for Hawaii, you should be ok, imo

Thank you both!

if they accepted it i don’t think it should matter.

I would contact admissions, explain what happened, and ask how the school will handle your application.

-- Deadline is midnight Eastern time!

-- Allow a minimum of 20" for the application to travel through cyber space. More time would be better.

-- Counselor and teacher recommendations may be admitted later.

They didn’t slam the door shut on intaking ED apps. Yes it’s their deadline but they WANT your ED application. It’s not in their best interests to shunt your app into the RD pile because of this.

This same question will be raised 8 million times come Dec 31st and Jan 1st. Just wait and see. Happens EVERY year at EVERY deadline passage. Just relax.
