Essay
I will write about a Table. How the table is important to me: In Africa my family and I were in a war and so we hide underneath the table from the bombs. Now, since I am in the USA for many years, don’t know exact number... but anyways, now my parents uses it to talk about bills and how will survive for next day.

So the essay will be a contrast of the use of a table in two different countries and two different situations.

I am thinking of transferring after a year at Penn State

You have essentially zero chance at being admitted for freshman year.

^ Not necessarily true.

Have you done SATs?

In comparison to many other applicants then yeah your GPA is low and your class ranking is low. But if you love the school then you should still give it a shot.

However, transferring will be even tougher than getting in as a freshman. Don’t go somewhere and “plan” to transfer to somewhere like Yale because you will almost definitely not be able to do it.

Good luck to you!

I handn’t noticed that you were an part of an underrepresented minority. This improves your chances, but I can’t see them being anything above 1% because your ACT is subpar and your grades are significantly below average among Yale acceptees.

As an URM: .8% chance
If you were not an URM: .1% chance

I’ve reviewed hundreds of different results posts, and I’ve never seen anyone with a 3.0 GPA accepted by a top school.

A quality way to spend one’s time. :)

You have no idea.

That means you’ll be submitting transfer applications after completing only 1 sem/qt at Penn State, therefore your HS record and test scores will be weighted more than what you’ve done in college. Not to mention that the acceptance rate is about 2% for transfers as opposed to ca. 9% for fr admissions.

but do you think i can get into other top school like … upenn, cornell, duke, or Johns Hopkins University?? after a year at penn state…

I don’t think you’d have good chances at a top-ranked university.

No offense, but that 3.0 GPA is low. Weighted or unweighted. Not to mention that you’re only in pre-calculus…

emory, rice, duke and cornell

no matter what you should definitely still try for it… if you dont try you’ll have no chance but if you at least apply you do have a chance.

just try to write a kick a s s essay, and get stellar recs and cross your fingers… that’s what all of us do even if we have a 2300+ or a 35+ =)

You dont have the best GPA
However your extra activities seem good
And your essay has a VERY interesting idea

Like lemons said…just try and see what happens
best of luck

What’s up with Saugus’s comment about the OP only being in pre-calculus, as if that’s going to significantly (if necessarily at all) hurt her chances? I don’t think Yale is particularly concerned about that, depending on the context of the entire application.

^^^I believe Saugus is referring to the fact that taking precalc as a sr math class may not indicate a very rigorous courseload (for math at least), as most HSs offer AP Calc and most applicants to the highly selective schools have attained this level.

Along with gpa, the level of coursework, within the context of what is offered at your HS, is one of the most important factors in admissions. It’s impossible to know whether or not this will affect the OPs chances.

I say go for it! Your essay, if written well, wil be amazing and as lemons says, you have decent extracurriculars! Don’t let people’s opinions weigh you down…let yale know why you’re unique and focus on your talents in you app instaed of your shortcomings. not only that, i know 2 people with a gpa of 3 who got into ivies with amazing essays. definitely go for it!

but im thinking to transfer from penn state after a year

^ make it two. I think you’re interesting. Good luck!

do you think transferring will hurt my chances?

“because your ACT is subpar”

Um, an ACT of 30 is in the 96th percentile. It’s hardly “subpar” for any school. Add to that that this particular applicant is performing well above her demographic peers on the standardized test and the score might be viewed as stellar.

Truth is that it will be hard for this applicant to get into the most selective schools because the grades will always be an issue. But on the other side of the coin, left-leaning northeast schools might love this applicant. This is a committed, passionate, driven person who seems well grounded and will add to the educational experience anywhere she attends. On a good day in any admissions office, she might get in.

Good luck, Race. Write a great essay and keep up the great work!
