answered correctly in 10 seconds:

wow i was actually struggling…then i read the problem again and now i want to kill myself cause it was so easy

LIAR!
Well unless you used a calculator. Then it’s possible. It took me a little under 30 seconds doing it in my head.

It took you 10 seconds? Wow some people can be so stupid. I took 3 secs to read the problem. I knew that 7-24-25 was a Pythagorean triple before I even finished the problem. It took me about 2-3 secs to realize that 15-20-25 was another form of the 3-4-5 triple. And another second of so to calculate 15-7 and click the answer. This question should take you 7 seconds, maybe 8 seconds tops. Or else you have no hope for a 800.

I actually got the question wrong on the first try, due to the silly mistake of trying to answer too quickly. And I got an 800 on the SAT Math section and an 800 on the SAT Math Subject Test! I imagined the triangle with hypotenuse 25 and vertical 20, realized that they both were divisible by 5, and got hypotenuse 5 and vertical length 4. Then the horizontal must be 3, the difference between 7 and 3 is 4, and so I picked 4 and got the wrong answer. Of course, it was wrong because I forgot to multiply the 3 by 5 to get 15, and 15-7 = 8.

somekidinnyc: Calculators don’t really help in this problem.

Lesson: Read the question carefully and in the same manner solve the problem. It’s not a race. The fact that Ankur solved the problem in fewer than ten seconds doesn’t mean anything.

@dchow08, It’s faster to calculate.

No not if you recognize the pythagorean triples, which you should.

this was a very difficult question and I actually doubt if ETS will have a question of that caliber in the real exam.

^Uh, yeah you can expect a question like this on SAT, especially since it was a question of the day. It’s not even that hard, though it would probably be one of the questions towards the end of a math section. If you think this is too difficult, maybe you need to get some more practice.

^Or maybe you should not expect an 800 on the math section.

^I never said I expect an 800 did I?
Maybe you shouldn’t be expecting one either.

Woops, put words in your mouth.

^LOL. I’m afraid you misunderstood me. I wasn’t saying that you shouldn’t expect an 800. I was referring to shaheiruddin, and used the caret as an indication of continuing on what you said.

^I’m cool cause I can do dis.

lmao it seems the question changed cause its an english Q now

A 25-foot ladder is placed against a vertical wall of a building, with the bottom of the ladder standing on concrete 7 feet from the base of the building. If the top of the ladder slips down 4 feet, then the bottom of the ladder will slide out

A. click to choose answer A 4 feet
B. click to choose answer B 5 feet
C. click to choose answer C 6 feet
D. click to choose answer D 7 feet
E. click to choose answer E 8 feet

Exactly!
Knowledge is Power.
I was saying it all along:

I didn’t list 15-20-25 triple there, but it’s a no-brainer: it follows 3-4-5, 6-8-10, …

getting 1 question correct, though in 10 seconds, will not guarantee an 800.
lol because u’ll have to face other diff kinds of probs, one lil trip u wont get that 800
by the way, if u really spent 10 sec on this prob, i can almost guarantee that u wont get an 800. u know why? u rushed. no matter how fast u read, u rushed. u spent only 10 secs, u didn’t check or reread the Q, u wont get that 800.
answering in 10 sec probably means u’re very smart, but it wont work on the sat XD
trust me,i’ve been there xD

o I actually did that question before the answer was E

Took me about 20 secs, I would say – but only because I’ve done similar ones countless times before.

This is a simple question. I got this right in about 15 seconds, but I didn’t get an 800 :/.
