I think I got rejected with Gibson Online but I'm not quite sure

After being deferred EA from Tulane, I have been checking my Gibson Online account. It has said "decision pending" for a long time, but today it changed. I am pretty sure this means I am rejected, but let me know if this sounds familiar to anyone (it does leave open the "option" of a wait list the way it is worded, but I don't know why they would not have said that). If anyone has gotten this message and the following letter, let me know, as I sort of want to make my peace with all of this if that's what it is.

My status changed to:

Undergraduate Admissions (2010 Fall)
The Committee on Admission has completed review of your application for admission to Tulane University. Regretfully, you were not among those students selected for admission to the university. A letter with further information will be mailed to your home.

I actually don’t see any ambiguity. I am afraid you did not get in.

Thanks… onward.

Take it easy, and good luck.

The only ambiguity I see is that “not among those students selected for admission” could mean waitlisted or rejected.

I think they were just trying to make it sound "softer’, less harsh. But I see what you mean. Still, I would have no doubt they meant they are not offering admission or waitlisting. I cannot imagine they wouldn’t have changed the status to “waitlisted” if that was the decision.

The only question I had was what the “further information” on this would be. I have been accepted by the first five schools I have heard from, and was hoping for Tulane as it would have been a great option, but understand they don’t all work out- and I know I should be grateful this is my first “no”. I have six more to hear from, and a few look promising. If the letter says anything different then a “soft” rejection, then I’ll post in case someone else has the same question.

absolutely! And congrats on the others. Tulane is apparently going to have the strongest class ever, it certainly was the strongest set of applications ever, not to mention largest volume. Where are you leaning towards going of the ones where you have been accepted, and where would you choose if you got into the rest?

Unless the further info is a waitlist notice, I can only guess that it might include information about transferring next year or something. Will be interesting to see.

Best of luck!

Hope you have a great freshman year wherever you go and come to Tulane as a transfer in a year or two.

Thanks… I still am hoping (probably in vain) that it is a wait list, and am a little upset with myself that I didn’t play up my strengths a little better as I did with some of the other schools (getting in touch with coaches as some of the other schools approached me directly on my golf and communicating better with the art department on my portfolio as I have elsewhere). When you are applying to a dozen schools, it’s hard to do it right with them all, and it isn’t until the acceptances/rejections roll in that you realize where you’d really like to be. Of what’s left where would I like to go if I got in everywhere? I loved Wake Forest’s art department but the location isn’t my favorite, and Vandy would be a good fit for me for a variety of reasons. Today I’d say I would be either at USC or Georgia honors of where I’ve been accepted. I’ll know a lot more a week from now.

Well, I appreciate your wanting Tulane (but then I am a tad biased) but those are some great choices! I am sure it will work out wonderfully for you.

^^Are you saying you got into USC - I’m assuming that’s the one in Los Angeles, not in Columbia, SC - and Georgia honors? If so that’s great. I’m sure you’ll do well…but consider a transfer anyway.

Agree with all above- sorry for the denial. It is possible the letter you receive will say “but we are offering you a spot on our wait list”, but why wouldn’t they say that in the email? And agree with need for clarification? Carolina or California? And congrats on UGA Honors. Thats wonderful!

I too did not get the desired response from Tulane. Thank God I’m at school right now or I would probably be crying. Just to clear up any confusion the wait list letter looks like this:
After careful consideration of your credentials, the admission committee has decided to place you on our waitlist.
We have all the materials necessary for this review, so you are not required to send any additional material. You will be notified of the committee’s decision no later than June 1. If you have questions regarding your status, please call the Undergraduate Admission Office at 800-873-WAVE (9283)."
This really sucks! Tulane was my first choice. Does anyone know the percentage of people admitted of the the wait list?

ksmore - I do not know what has historically been the case, but it probably wouldn’t matter anyway since they have had so many apps this year, things could go any direction. Keep your spirits up, you never know.

Just out of curiosity, was this what they posted online or was it a physical letter? If it was a physical letter, what does your on-line status say?

I got waitlisted too - I got the same message as ksmore. It took the place of the decision pending message on my Gibson account.
Now I’m a little worried! Tulane was one of my target schools. I applied to waaaay too many reaches…ugh, I hope I end up SOMEWHERE! I think a big part of the problem with the Tulane app is that it was my only non-Common App application, and so I wasn’t able to include the materials I did for my other schools - including a resume and a couple of brief CA-required essays explaining my unique circumstances that led to less-than-amazing grades. I wasn’t able to explain it, and I should have searched harder for a way to do so, but when you apply to thirteen schools it’s hard to keep on top of these things! Oh well, I hope this isn’t indicative of what’s to come.

It may not be indicative at all, Ivy. Tulane appears to be having an especially great year in terms of students that want to come, and there are only so many slots. They say they shoot for 1400, but I think they are really happier with 1500, and 1550-1600 makes things very tight in terms of dorm space. So this may not be a reflection at all of how your other apps, even your reaches, will turn out.

If Tulane is really of interest for you, talk to your admissions counselor. They need to know if you would really go to Tulane if they made an offer. If you don’t know yet because you are waiting to hear from those reach schools, then I guess there is not much to do except wait.

My daughter also got the same waitlist message ksmore and ivy mention - and it was on her Gibson online account late this morning. I’m sure a formal letter will follow. Oh well…it was a reach for her and she’s in at her second choice school…all is good.

Thanks for the info lovegoldens. That pretty much ties down the OP’s question then. He did not get waitlisted, but was turned down.

Sounds like your D is happy with her alternative school as well, and that’s great.

Lots of kids on CC last year got accepted off the waitlist, so hang in there. Admissions will know a lot more in April once other schools notify.
