i applied for college with financial aid thinking i was going to be able to pass all my classes but as soon as i get into class i realized im not learning anything no matter how hard i try nothings getting through ..now its the end of the year and im failing all my classes did i add that i failed 2 classes from a previous year and now im going to fail 2 more this year and im already on probation what should i do i cant drop. i should have known i had problems with learning long time ago i have never succefully passed a grade in middle school or highschool without going to summer school each year now i think my finacial aid will get pulled is it too late to tell them that i have a learning disability will they still take my aid away what are the first things i should do

OK, it sounds as if you’re saying that ever since middle school, you have failed several courses each year and only proceeded to the next grade because you repeated classes in summer school. Then you entered college and the pattern continued, with you failing classes in freshman and now soph year, resulting in you being on probation. You are thinking that your problems in school are caused by a learning disability, but you have never been tested for one. You are also concerned that you will lose your FA 1.) because you are flunking out of school and 2.) because you never told the FA office that you suspect you have an LD.

OK, first of all, is your FA tied to maintaining a certain GPA? Ask the FA office directly. FA is often tied to family income, so if you are still in college, the FA continues, but if you flunk out, of course, it stops. But your college might insist that a student have a certain GPA to receive FA, so you need to find out. Ask.

Know that no student is ever obligated to reveal that they have an LD to the FA office, and given that you’ve never been tested for or diagnosed with an LD, there is nothing to reveal.

Second, it sounds as if you’ve been having the same problems in school for many years. I’m concerned that you were never tested for learning disabilities and that you never got remedial help but simply kept repeating classes year after year.

There are many reasons that a student might have trouble in school. If you think that LD’s might be a problem you have, why don’t you go over to the office that helps students with LD’s, or to your student counseling center, and talk with someone there? Find out how to get tested for LD’s. Does your school’s psychology department have a graduate school with a low cost clinic where you could be tested? Does the school’s LD support office have a list of local psychologists and clinics who do testing? Knowing whether or not you have an LD, and understanding why you have been having so much trouble in school, will make a big difference in your life.

To my mind, although the possibility of getting kicked out of college and losing FA is a big deal, the bigger deal is why you are having so much trouble passing classes and finding out what you can do about it.

Finally, I am assuming that your college saw your high school transcript and that this is a college that accepts students who have trouble passing in high school. In many such colleges, there is a lot of academic support for students who have difficulty with college work. Does your college offer workshops on study skills, have a writing center, offer tutoring? If you haven’t been using these services on a regular basis, in addition to getting yourself evaluated for LD’s asap, go get yourself some tutoring and academic support as soon as possible.

Good luck!
