On my job applications. I've filled out about five of them thus far and put that I was going to Rutgers University in the fall (which is obviously true). I thought that would have made me more competitive when it's possibly having the opposite effect because I got an email from a Walgreens branch in Atlanta and they told me they didn't have any positions for me at the time. Same with Pizza Hut and for both of those places I mentioned Rutgers. What should I do?

Try to transfer into a better school?

I’m guessing that you are a high school senior looking for some extra spending money before you graduate and an easy summer job… during my senior year of HS, I was literally in the same position.

You don’t need to include your college if you haven’t matriculated yet, so that will help. It’s likely that the hiring managers at the stores you’re applying to don’t want someone they know is going to just leave in a few months. You shouldn’t hide the fact that you’re going to college, but if you leave it off your resume, you can bring it up during an interview, where you will have the ability to show why it’s worth the store’s time to hire you, even if only for four or five months.

Personally, I picked up a job as a server at Macaroni Grill in March of my senior year, and I kept it until I left for school in August. Keep on applying to places… I spent three days just going all over the place, applying to restaurants and stores. It probably took fifteen applications before I got a job, but it was worth the effort.

And… think about it this way… this job search is like a pared down version of your job search four years from now (I applied to 15 places over three days during high school before getting a job; during college, I applied to more than 50 places over five MONTHS before I got my first fulltime, post-grad offer!)

Great advice, chrisw! I seriously thought I had done something wrong, but when you told me you applied to over 15 different jobs, that gave me a bit of hope and encouragement to keep trying, and you graduated from UPenn? That’s amazing! I’ve heard nothing but great things about that school and how difficult it is to get accepted since it’s an Ivy League school. I will certainly keep what you said in mind in the future.

angryelf, I’m still in high school, but all I did was mention that I’m going to Rutgers for the 2012-2013 term, but I think on my next job apps, I will try not to mention it so much to see what happens.
