I think I posted this in the wrong forum before...

Hey, please, please help me?

I had really great grades until the second trimester of my sophomore year. I managed to get them back up to par for the third trimester, but I had a pretty rough time after that. I'm a junior now, and my grades for the first semester of this year were horrible. Now they're solidly good, and I plan on having them back up to great by the end of this year. By the time I graduate, I will have 7-10 AP credits, for whatever that's worth. I am sure of an exam score of at least 3 for 6-9 of those.

I'm fully confident that my recommendations will be stellar and that my essay(s) will be great. As for the SAT's, I've got a 2250, but I can retake it and improve if that's necessary. I was a 2-letter varsity athlete with a few awards for 2 years, but this year I moved to a new school and I only play sports on club teams. I don't really have any leadership roles.

My weighted GPA (just for this semester) is a 3.9. It will be a 4.4-4.6 by the end of the year, but my cumulative year-long GPA won't be nearly as good. Next year at least a 4.0 can be counted on.

I know it's bad, so please don't sugarcoat this for me haha. I was just wondering, should I give up on any moderately selective (<50% acceptance rate? <20%?) schools? Is now a good time to just figure on state/community college?

Note I do have a reason, for my performance and participation dropping down so far. I'm not comfortable using it as an excuse, though. Difficult things happen to all of us, and I should have known how to cope better than I did.

Note The "bad grades" were actually a couple of D's, and maybe one F (I'm not 100% on that). They were all corrected by the next term report, but they're ugly all the same.

What are the schools you’re aiming for?

If you can afford them, perhaps U Toronto or UBC should be worth considering.

I forgot to say that I play the cello, but just for my own benefit, and that I understand and am close to fluent speech in both Spanish and German. I need some time in a Spanish and German speaking country to perfect them.

@catria The trouble is that I don’t know what schools to aim for. I don’t know how I’d do at different levels, if that makes sense. I would love to go to UBC.

I know it’s a completely different campus environment compared to UBC but perhaps Tulane and even USC should be doable if you put your act together.

As far as UBC is concerned, I have seen 3.5W/1800 kids get into that school with the kinds of ECs you have. So a 3.9W/2250 student can consider UBC a safety.

That’s such a relief. I was worried that I’d have to go to a community college or something. Thank you so much, Catria.
The one thing is, my weighted at the end of the year won’t be a 3.9 because my grades from the beginning will bring it down. I’m not sure. My senior year they should be high across the board. I’m hoping that’ll carry me as far as GPA, because I’m not too dissatisfied with the rest of my application material, you know?
I hope I get in somewhere decent. I’m glad it’s worth applying. Thank you again.
