I think I screwed up, or am I too modest?

Hello, I want to know people's opinions on my chances on getting into the following schools:

UC Berkeley
Stanford
Yale
Harvard
Princeton
UCLA
U of Chicago
Johns Hopkins
UCSD
UCSB
MIT

This is my profile:

SAT - Math (700), Critical Reading (540), Writing (560)
SAT II - Chem (560), US History and Math II (630)
ACT (I'm planning to take them in Sept. because I took a practice test and got a 29 on it)

I have a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 4.125 weighted GPA.

I've taken the most rigorous course load, taking 4 AP classes and 2 Honors classes.

AP Grades: Calc AB - 4, US History - 4, Chem - 2, Spanish - 1

I've been part of theatre since freshman year getting several lead roles, and so far, a total of 12 productions in 2 and a half years.

I'm also a section leader in choir, and been on the choir board for 2 years being treasurer.

I'm Drama Club president. I also re-established the JSA in my school, thus making me the president of that as well. I'm also the Public Relations Commissioner for leadership, in charge of all the publicity that goes around the school.

I've done 100+ hours of community service (volunteering, theater, helping out with someone's eagle scout project, etc.)

Every summer, I've done something productive. I've done plays, I've gotten a job, I participated in Stanford program that only 8 got into out of 140 that applied, I got accepted into another Stanford program the same summer, and I've taken a college course as well and got a B+ in it)

I'm a first-generation college bound student, and English is my second language. My family income is below $60,000 because my parents are divorced.

I love learning, and pushing myself to do the best I can with what I have. It may not be perfect all the time, but it's the mistakes I make that keep me striving for better.
hsstudent09 is online now

Wow, interestingly your profile is very very similar to mine. My SAT scores are slightly higher, but everyone has been telling me to take them again. I would suggest the same to you  Your profile is looking VERY good!

your profile looks good with the exception of your SAT scores – dont get me wrong, they are fine scores – but they will not get you into those schools with the exception of maybe ucsb or ucsd…if you want a chance at the rest, you’ll need to bring those up considerably…good luck!

GPA and SATs are extremely low.

^^ - a 3.8 GPA is not low at all…

a 3.8 in a rigorous courseload is extremely low??? extremely??? really…

ok..since when is a 3.8 low? Just ignore mutant3324.

You have great ECs. Don’t underestimate yourself. APs scores are usually not something you need to report to colleges (I wouldn’t report your scores to colleges though). I really think that they will look favorably towards a 1st generation college student whose second language is english. It makes sense that it’s kind of difficult to perform academically when your parents are divorced..maybe you can mention that. Your standardized test scores are low..but the magic number for most top colleges is 2100ish.

So here are your chances…I’d say everything is a mid to high reach except UCSD, UCLA, and UCSB. But..to be completely realistic…I don’t think MIT, Princeton, Yale, and Chicago are too sympathetic.

Good luck!
Can you chance me @ http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/548393-my-chances-georgetown-duke-uva-emory-gatech-hopkins.html</a></p>

You have several UCs on your list, so I am guessing you are in CA. Some UC info:

UC Berkeley, UCLA, and even UCSD get more and more selective each year - they each have approximately 50,000 applicants! (Cal and UCLA both had average SATs over 2000) UCSB is a good choice for you, and you might look into UCD and UCI as well. Here are the 2008 freshman profiles for all the UCs. Compare your information and see how you stack up: [University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles.html)

You will need to re-calculate your GPA for the UCs: Use your soph and Jr years only. Only count UC-approved courses (no PE!) listed for your high school: https://doorways.ucop.edu/list/servlet.jsf;jsessionid=E1734002DBBCD8F44FE849C21476D257?_flowExecutionKey=_cD71E303D-1716-6211-02E6-CF7BF407A4BD_k12C0FA60-8A6B-CB54-3A72-53FC7BDBCB33</a> Add 1 extra point for each semester of UC-approved AP classes. Honors classes do not receive extra points and you are limited to only two extra GPA points in your sophmore year (one class, one extra pt per semester). You can find detailed instructions on calculating your GPA at the bottom of this page: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

Good luck!

Your SAT scores are low for all the schools on your list with the possible exception of UCSD and UCSB. I know three people with considerably higher SATs and higher grades than yours who did not get into Berkeley or UCLA this year. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply. It does mean that you should include more ‘match’ and ‘safety’ schools.

thanks for those who gave feedback.

my top choice is Stanford, so does anyone really have an opinion on that? i have a friend who got in with a 1700. he chose the architect major, and has a brother who’s in stanford as well. So maybe that helped him? where does that put me?

Your SATs and SATIIs are both very low in the eyes of the schools you’re applying to, and the ECs aren’t going to be able to cover them up. It’s a very high reach for HYPS and MIT; I know someone that got 800 on mathII and chem and a 790 on US and didn’t get into any of the above.

You have more chance at Chicago or JHU but still it’s a reach. If you’re in Cali you have more advantage for the UCs but you still need to kick your scores up a notch for Berkeley and UCLA.

As for your Stanford friend, legacy probably got him in.

Okay, I have no idea why no one has said this yet, I guess people are “too nice” to tell it like it is. Your SAT I and SAT II are EXTREMELY low. Your ECs are not only boring, but also are limited. Virtually no hooks, no awards, and you failed to mention your class rank. Your essays and recommendations will not be able to cover these faults. Also, IIRC, even if your parents are divorced, you have to report the income of both parents.

From a holistic viewpoint, I wouldn’t say HYPSM are extraordinarily high reaches, I’d say they’re impossible.

The only redeeming aspect of your application is your 3.8 UW GPA.

^ This guy is brutally honest. I think your EC’s are pretty good though, actually, if you can show your dedication on the essay or something.

If you want to get to one of those top schools, you NEED to use A LOT of your extra time right now to start studying. Personally, I think the SAT might not be your thing; perhaps you can take some ACT practice tests and focus on them and then decide to NOT report your SATs, or you’d need to re-prepare for your SATs/SAT2s

Right now, you’re comparing yourself to your Stanford friend with the 1700. That is definitely not a good idea; don’t go for the minimum, because if you want to go to one of those top schools, you’ll need to be exceptional.

Considering that it’s a rigorous courseload, your scores on the AP’s are really not going to help your situation.

I really believe you need to find some more match/safeties, in all honesty.

people here are ridiculously brutal, ***. from what i see, you have something unique to bring to the table in terms of life-experiences (i guess you could say that…?) .. give it a shot, and don’t listen to anyone who says you have no chance in hell anywhere like the effing protagonist^. good luck :)

your test scores make me question the rigor of your hs.

"people here are ridiculously brutal, ***. from what i see, you have something unique to bring to the table in terms of life-experiences (i guess you could say that…?) .. give it a shot, and don’t listen to anyone who says you have no chance in hell anywhere like the effing protagonist^. good luck "

Err… being pessimistic isn’t the same as being realistic. His SAT score puts him in like, the bottom 5% of applicants to several of those schools…

Personally, I’m not saying don’t apply… I’m saying you need to work on your tests to have a good shot.

there are other schools in the world other than HYPSM…he wont get into super elite school..but he could get into some ok state schools…
