I want to start off by saying I really did not intend to do this. I didn’t realize it was a problem until i looked over my application today.
Some background information:
At my HS we receive ONE final grade per class. This one final grade determines GPA & is the only grade visible on Official transcripts. Our final grade is determined by averaging two term grades together. However, for an unknown reason i could not figure out how to set this grading style up on the UC application. So instead I choose a grading style that showed a grade for both a first and second term.
Now for classes I got A’s in I just put an A for both term 1 and term 2 because my final was an A. However, for classes I got a B in and because I wanted to look better, i regret this now, I put an A for term 1 and a B for term 2. Most of these classes I actually did get an A one term and a B the other they just happened to even out to a B as a final but when I send in my final transcripts they will only be able to see the B. So there is no way for me to prove I ever got an A the first term.
Am I just screwed? Will they care? Will they interpret this as lying? Will they interpret it as a B? Should I just hope for the best? I applied to 6 colleges in the UC system and they are the only colleges I applied to so if the application is messed up I won’t have any school.
Thank you for any advice ahead of time,
If you are admitted, then you have to submit your final transcript, right? I’m not an expert on UC admissions, but in Illinois, applicants self report their grades and if admitted, then the official transcript is requested.
I don’t know if this is too big of a deal, (maybe someone with UC knowledge can comment) if it was an honest mistake, but putting misleading info on your app is an offense that could hold some consequences.
Best to always just be your true self and let success come to you.
UC’s allows you to to self report your classes and grades on the application and ask for your transcripts if your accepted. That’s what I remember when applying a few years back.
I assume you’re in-state in California?
Why don’t you ask your guidance counselor the best way to handle that. I think it will be ok.
According to the admissions officers at our UC visits, this is VERY serious. They said that they rescind acceptances for honest errors, and your “unintentional lie” doesn’t sound very honest. They advised students to review their applications painstakingly before submitting, just to avoid any discrepancies. They might have exaggerated the severity of such mistakes, but they made it clear that they rescind numerous acceptances every year for reasons like this. You should have spoken with your adviser before submitting a final application, but by all means follow up on this to see how it might affect you.
I agree with woogzmama. Putting down an A for your first semester when it’s not on your transcript is very serious. I would talk to your GC and try to fix your application before they review and make their decisions. It would be awful to be accepted only to have that acceptance recinded later on because those As are not on your transcript.
So do I understand correctly that in some classes you DIDN’T get an A one term? In that case, you weren’t unintentionally lying - that is intentional lying. In the cases where you reported what you actually got, I don’t see where there’s a problem.
I understand why you may have done this but reporting grades that your transcript can’t prove is considered intentional.
I would speak with your GC to see if he/she can send them a postal mail regarding your school’s grading system (explaining how you did actually earn As in one term but your transcript is only going to show the average of the two terms).
