I think I'm screwed

I'm a Canadian.
And I would like my chances.

I'm a junior at an IBO school. A couple of this year's class went to Harvard, some more to Cornell, Dartmouth, etc.

Numbers:

SAT: 2230 (might retake)
Math-730
CR-800
Writing-700 (essay 7(!!!))

Haven't taken the SAT II's yet.

GPA: This is where I think I'm screwed
Gr. 10-93 (yeah...)
Gr. 11-90~(yeah...)
Gr. 12- hopefully higher
Rank is unknown.

Course Load: Hardest- IB Diploma

Currently:
English IB
Social Studies IB
Chem IB
Calc IB SL

Next Year:
More of the same, really, but with Bio IB and French IB added.

Activities: This is also where I think I'm screwed
Junior Achievement (2005-2007)- This is where you start your own company and sell your products, I was Vice President both years

Interact Club (2006-2007)- Essentially a volunteer club, I'm vice president next year

Debate (2005-2007)- Not that good at it, but I try

Speech (2006-2007)- I'm decent, minor awards

Sanofi-Aventis Biotechnology research (2006-2007)- research project, took a lot of time

Model UN (2005-2007)- Pretty bad at this, but I'm one of the major organizers of the club

Some other clubs without much leadership. I also volunteered some here and there. I am, you could say, not all that accomplished.

Soooo...
I would like to know my chances at:

Dartmouth
Brown
Middlebury

So thanks a lot; feel free to make any comments/suggestions and to ask questions.

Cheers

You have great scores and the IB diploma thing kind of offsets any perceived GPA deficit. IB tends to be harder than AP.

Brown is a HUGE crapshoot and basically impossible to predict. But I think you have good shots at Dartmouth and Middlebury.

Ah, thanks, this actually makes me feel a bit better.
What about Davidson? Do I have a good shot there?

yeah, I would second ses! But apply to all your choices........doesn't hurt right? ;)

Yeah, i'm just interested in my potential chances. I would say that this is for fun if that didn't sound so absurdly sad.

Anyways, about the low GPA thing: we have a cult of self-loathing due to our involvement in IB and the low marks that we have to show for our efforts, so I hope being in IB actually helps.

Davidson?
Swarthmore?
Others?

Swarthmore - No
Davidson - Yes

I think your stats are great! I really admire all IB diploma candidates, the courseload is so rigorous and everyone works so hard! From what I've heard, yes, Brown is a crapshoot, and I'm not sure about Dartmouth, but I think Davidson would be a good match. . .

Since when is Brown more selective than Dartmouth? The .7-1.5% accept rate difference (Dart 15% AND overenrolled, Brown 13.5% plus took off the WL) is easily made up by self selection. And both have always been much more selective than Midd by a decent margin.

I guess I'm in the lottery for both Brown and Dartmouth?
Or is it rather worse than that?

Brown is a different type of selective. They look for different things. It's easier to predict acceptances for Yale/Dartmouth than it is for Brown because of the nature of the institution.

Dartmouth Low/Mid Reach
Brown Low/Mid Reach
Middlebury Low Reach/High Match

Your GPA is around a what? 3.7ish? Bring that up. Try to get more leadership positions.

Chance me? :)

I guess my most pressing question is if my EC's and stats will be enough to at least gain the possibility of having my essay read at a school of, say, Princeton's calibre.

^It will get read. But the international pool is killer. So that doesn't mean you'll get in.

Bring
up
my
post

About Brown- does anyone know generally about what they look for? Is there a general trend, or does it change perennially?

I would like to know this too. I have heard that Brown likes athletes, legacies, celebrities, and minorities, but what about students not in any of these categories?

Anyone? At all?

Most schools agree that your legacy status is only a significant boost in the ED round. And athletes are encouraged to apply ED because the pool is less selective number wise and there are fewer applicants to compare them to. And MIT is rumored to take the majority of their minority students through ED.

ED at Brown is not going to be super easy by any means. It just means that as a regular student you're more likely to be deferred than anyone in the categories you listed.

BUMP
thanks ses.

Does it help my chances at all if I got accepted by the local health region as an intern for the development of resources for community relations? Or if I apply ED to Dartmouth, will I likely get in?
