I Think I'm Starting To Like Rap.

People act like hip hop is strictly an extension of black people when it really isn't. Hip hop by in large is a culture dominated by black people (especially in America) and founded in the same tradition as a lot of black music but that isn't to discredit how many other people also influenced the culture. I mean back when it first all started in the South Bronx, there were a lot of Latinos (mostly Puerto Rican) who were in the whole thing... then you got Latinos and Asians like Cypress Hill, Big Pun, Zach de la Rocha, Chad Hugo, DJ Qbert who've all done their thing. This is not to even mention the huge impact hip hop has had all over the world, in Latin America and the Carribean (baile funk and modern dancehall), Asia, Africa, Europe. Americans always like to break things down so black and white (literally) when really it goes far beyond that. I mean if you don't like the music that's cool, but we should all be able to move on.

What people don't seem to realize is that a lot of the time, good hip-hop is simply poetry presented over a beat. I think this has become lost in the mainstream today, leading a lot of people to reject hip-hop as an art.
This isn't to say that the genre is dead--alternative hip-hop is doing just as well as it ever has been (slight exaggeration, but oh well).

It seems that a lot of people consider liking rock and liking hip-hop to be two mutually exclusive interests, which is a pity. I listen predominantly to indie rock, but aam still able to appreciate hip-hop for its lyricism and social consciousness (something SEVERELY lacking in rock). It's really the same plight that rock has--the mainstream is flooded with complete crap, and those too lazy to find GOOD music (whether it be rock or hip-hop) condemn it.

Deltron, Immortal Technique, and Jedi Mind tricks are good.

50 cent, ludacris, chamillionaire are garbage.

Most good rap is dead. If you want to find good stuff you have to look very very hard, which most people are not willing to do. They rather just accept the mainstream stuff and listen to that. Mainstream rap is sickening..

You probably like classical music or something.

Yea, because listening to some idiot spew inane drivel about how big his phallus is or how much cocaine he can snort is clearly superior to listening to say..Wagner.

To all rap listeners: Here are some words you might need to look up: inane, drivel, phallus, Wagner.

Yep, no college educated person who happens to listen to rap music knows what inane, drivel, or phallus is, or know who Richard Wagner is. Not that people like Puff Daddy (Howard), Lil Wayne (currently studying poli sci at Houston), DJ Premier (studied computer science at Prarie A&M), or David Banner (a thesis away from a masters at Maryland) know anything about college education, or have given away college scholarships or anything.

Ironically enough, Wagner was a favorite composer of the Nazis.

haha...10characters

You are trying to imply...?
Hitler was also a vegetarian, as was Gandhi. Hitler really liked an efficient highway system, so did Eisenhower. Hitler painted, and so did Churchill. See what I mean about rap fans being illogical.

I wasn't really implying anything, I just found it funny. Of course I wouldn't hate anything just because Hitler did it (I've seen Wagner pieces performed live by an orchestra FWIW), unless of course you are a vegetarian, then you aren't worth my time =P

Bossman :)
