i'm a freshman at a state university. bc of my ACT scores, i placed out of english 101, 102 etc and took public speaking. i have zero fear of public speaking itself, but the class itself was very difficult to sit through for various reasons. my transition to college has been pretty rough, and i've been sick (in and out of the hospital), been in a car accident (not severe but very stressful) and suffering from depression this semester (i'm starting to see on campus counselors). bc of this i've missed both of the speeches i was supposed to make, along with a lot of this class.
speeches are, to my knowledge, most of our grade. so far i've figured that i would just find a way to make it up, but now, this late in semester i'm starting to freak out. what are my best options for my GPA? should i:
talk to my professor honestly about how i've been struggling (he seems like an nice enough guy) and ask him if i can make up the speeches?
talk to an advisor and see if i can drop the class somehow?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I really don’t get why people ask questions on these forums before they’ve spoken to the professor.

Of course that should be the first thing you do.

If the professor is a jerk about it (which he probably won’t be if you have a doctor’s note/er sheet), then you go to an advisor to see your options.

Talk to the professor about what the best case scenario is and what your options are for improving your grade, and if they are not satisfactory talk to an adviser about dropping the class. Unfortunately sometimes life gets in the way of things. You need to take responsibility for it immediately and see what can be done before you run out of options.

You missed two speeches in a public speaking class and were expecting to just “make it up” later in the semester? Dude, this isn’t high school. Talk to your professor.

If you missed them because you were in the hospital, document your stay. If you missed because of a dr appointment, document it. If you missed it just because, you shouldn’t be allowed to make it up. If you can’t make it up, Pass/Fail the class.

Speak with the Professsor ASAP. You should have taken this step a while ago when you missed your first speech. Set up a meeting with the Professor today.

Talk to your professor and let them know what is going on. If you must, you can also go through your school counselor to do this but you ought to really be upfront with your professor.

Is it possible to drop ? If you must, then do it! Make sure that you can still drop without it being placed on your transcripts.

Either way, you should talk to your prof!
