I think my college accidentally placed me in the honors program?

Hey guys! I did not receive a letter stating I would be in the honors program when I got my acceptance letter. I had absolutely no knowledge I would be part of the program. I didn’t receive any scholarship money either. I consider myself to be a very strong student now, however. My first three years of high school I was immature and didn’t take school seriously. But, senior year I took a bunch of ap classes and got As in all of them, as well as teaching myself AP calc. The school has an acceptance rate of about 70%. The problem is on my orientation everyone was told the honors students had to have a sat of 1970 and gpa of 3.6+. I’m not close to either of those. I got a 1600 and 3.2 gpa. To be fair, I had probably a 4.6 weighted gpa senior year. During orientation the honors kids were told to leave, and when I didn’t move this lady already knew my name and told me I was in the program. I was surprised to say the least.

I’m so unbelievably happy to be in the program. I feel I’m more than capable of succeeding and never had more determination to continue my great work senior year. I’m afraid it was a mistake on their part though, and I don’t know what to do… Do I say nothing and hope they don’t catch it or that it wasn’t a mistake?? I was sort of bummed out I was going to this school because I felt I’d be misplaced and smarter than everyone else. This honors program is essential. I couldn’t be more happy to be a part of it.

But, I’m petrified it was a mistake. What do I do? What are the odds they messed up?? There was only 6 honors kids. Surely they would have known there was one extra right?

 Sometimes, things go your way. They have you on the list. You’re happy to be on the list. Worst-case scenario (and this is really the worst-case), they realize their mistake…but I believe they’d be too embarrassed to admit it and let you stay in anyway. The more likely scenario – you legitimately got in. Now show them that they made the right choice!

Thank you so much! That’s a huge relief. I know I will succeed, but I was afraid I was going to lose the opportunity. This past year my high school didn’t think I could handle IB calculus and forced me to stay on the high school calculus course (which is a joke of a course). That is why I taught myself ap calc, and it was so much harder than taking the class. I figured it would happen again in college where I’d have to do double the work for the same results. Being able to start off in the program is a huge relief. Thank you so much

I doubt it’s a mistake. Sometimes people/schools/organizations see potential and decide that with a small boost, that person could really shine. Sounds like you’re being given a shot at proving them right. Good for you!

I don’t believe it’s a mistake. :stuck_out_tongue: Congratulations on getting in. I hope you prove them right!

Thank you guys! I’m so happy right now

Agree with all of the above posters. Even if your objective stats are below average, its likely a holistic admission process and your essay and recs might have convinced the admissions committee that given the opportunity you could thrive in the honors program.
